Moving compound parts in orbit

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to add a module to my station - it's a small comms module with a windowed observation dome part on the end. The station side will have a docking port, but because of the windows, there's no place to put a docking port on the opposite end. Up until now I've always included a docking port on my modules and have a tug that can docks with it, pushes it into place and then undocks but in this case it won't work.

I'm looking for other ways to move my module around and get it docked accurately and open for ideas. I have KIS/KAS installed. Here's what I've considered so far:

  1. Surface attach a Cubic Octagonal strut to the observation window and a docking port to that. After I've docked the module, EVA and remove the strut using KIS - this is my best idea so far.
  2. somehow use the Klaw to grab the part - If I do it this way, can I still "control from here" on the station-side docking port and get correct module alignment?
  3. Is there a way for Kerbals to grab a part and then use their jetpacks to push it into place? - This would be really fun if Kerbals could push modules around.
  4. bring the module up as a bunch of parts and assemble the whole module in-situ with KIS

Any thoughts? thanks!

No experience with KIS/KAS  but in stock.

Add some rcs fuel and a set of rcs blocks to the module. You can then blow them off, or leave them in place for main station use.

Yes you can do a control from here on docking port  in a klawed module.

Yes there is a way for kerbals to push a module... but you have little control and you have to get the kerbal inline with the COM of the module. It's futzy but doable.
