Rover Turning During Acceleration

Recommended Posts

So, i originally built a rover in 1.0.5 which was just a probodobodyne rovermate with 3 rovemax model s2 wheels on each side placed in symmetry. It worked fine so i added a couple things and sent one to vall and it worked fine. I took a break for a while and when i came back i checked on the rover. When i hit W the rover accelerated and veered to the side. It was strange and I tested the same rover blueprint on kerbin and it still had a problem. Was it design or a bug? I haven't seen anything about it and i was hoping someone else could give me some insight.

I see the same effect; the rover turns a few degrees upon initial acceleration, as if the port-side wheels engaged a bit earlier than those on the starboard side.

It is associated with the way the white brick-shaped probe core is oriented, with its 'forward' direction pointing straight up the way you have it oriented, giving you the nav-ball that looks straight up.  (The orientation of the control axes on that brick-shaped core is frustrating.)  If you add a docking port to the front, and select 'control from here' on that docking port, then the nav-ball shows the horizon and there is no tendency to turn on start-up.

Well it should be noted that vehicles (especially those in real life) tend to veer initially as they gain traction. Now this tends to be only a few degrees (5-15 at most at an extreme) and after the wheels gain traction they tend to resume normal control. Now with KSP's 1.1 they likely included that aspect of traction.
