[support] Game crashes whole computer when in training

Recommended Posts

KSP Version: 1.1.3  - I just paid for and downloaded KSP for the first time, after hearing enough good things about it

What Happens: I start the first training program.  After clicking "Next" a few times and entering the ship building facility, my whole computer instantly shuts off after a few seconds.

Mods / Add-Ons: None.  Never played this game before.  And still haven't.

Steps to Replicate: Explained well-enough above

Result: Whole computer shuts off instantly.

Fixes/Workarounds: None.

Other Notes/Pictures/Log Files: Windows Home Premium 64 Bit on an Asus G75VW-NS71.  Complete dxdiag and logs here:

This is quite possibly the worst introduction to a game one could have.  I was quite excited about KSP.  Now, not so much.

Thanks for your help in advance.

If the game manages to crash your whole system (meaning: not even CTRL+ALT+DEL does anything), then what you are seeing is likely caused by something else, not by KSP, as on modern operating systems userspace applications should not be able to cause a system crash. What userspace applications can do though, is cause driver bugs or hardware issues to surface, and that's where I'd start looking for solutions.

  • First, make sure that all your device drivers are updated to the latest version, especially your graphics card drivers (I'd try to use the drivers available from the nVidia website, as those tend to be more up to date than those on the Asus website, but they might not work on all Asus laptops).
  • Check for firmware updates on the Asus website. It can easily be, that your laptop firmware is buggy
  • Make sure your laptop doesn't overheat. Open the case and remove dust from the fans.
  • Check your laptop's memory for errors. There's a free tool named memtest86+ (not to be confused with the non-free memtest86) for that.
Edit: If there are memory errors, it's perfectly possible that it's just a bad contact of the memory module. Before buying replacement memory, try to remove the module(s), and mount them again.

In any case, if you bought KSP over Steam, you should have a few hours of time (I don't remember how long...) to get a refund.
