How to manually unlock a science node?

I'm using the community tech tree but I'm not using all mods, this leaves you with some blank science nodes. How can I manually unlock specific science nodes?

Do you mean without spending science points?  You'd need to edit your save file.

You can also look at how much that node costs, then use the debug menu's advanced mode (hold Alt for five seconds after the menu is already open) to cheat yourself that amount of science points. And then just unlock it normally.

Or, you could rationalize that these "empty" nodes still represent technology that needs to be developed in order to enable future projects, even though they don't yield immediate benefits to your space program now.
