Looking for mods: most interesting&novel mods in KSP?

Playing stock KSP, I gathered enough science points to unlock all the tech tree before leaving kerbin SOI. I know it's only start, (as interplanetary travel starts then) but I want to setup some modded installs first.

I prefer to play mods with novelty, but google just gives list of famous mods... :(

So I came here to ask, what are the most interesting&novel mods in KSP?

Alright I have a really long list of mods which a must for me

Firstly I like my game a beautiful a possible, but that depends on your rig ofcourse:

  • Stock Visual Enhancements
  • Scatterer
  • Stock Visual Terrain
  • PlanetShine
  • Distant object Enhancements
  • WindowShine
  • RasterPropMonitor

For the gameplay I always use:

  • Tweakscale
  • Kerbal Engineer Redux
  • Precise Node
  • Kerbal Attachment System
  • Kerbal Inventory System
  • RCS Build Aid
  • persitant rotation
  • Ferram Aerospace Research

Really awesome part mods are:

  • Magic Smoke Industries Infernal Robotics
  • KW rocketry
  • Space Shuttle Lifting Body (Cormorant Aeronology Dev Thread)
  • Near future Solar

This is a very small part of the mods I use, but for me the most important.

I highly recommend you not to install them al at ones, except for the visual mods. For some mods you need to learn a bit, so when you install them al together, you can be overwhelmed...

For more realism you can also install Remote tech, but you really need to learn a lot of new gameplay.

You always have some required mods like modele manager and texture replacer.

I highly recommend to install the mods via CKAN. I don't know if you're familiair with it, but it is a very simple, but great program to install your mods. It checks if the certain mod is available for your KSP version and will update them when needed.

Also need to ask, which KSP version are you playing, in case of 1.2, I would wait a few months untill all mods are upgraded.

Oh and I don't know how good you are at KSP, but really, if you want a totally new gameplay, challenge etc. Install Real Solar System and Realism overhaul

Thanks, but I already know those mods. (I considered them as famous since I've heard about those mods on ksp forum/reddit/youtube/etc)

I'm planning to put those mods like KAC, KAS/KIS, KIE, KCT, USI mods, Infernal Robotics, RemoteTech, Near future mods, etc.

But I think that's not enough, since the contents seems to be a bit lacking.

So.. are there other mods with 'novel' and interesting contents?

+ For me, 'Here's more parts!' or 'Here's more planets!' mods are not an option. They just looks same as each other, and stock itself.

+ If there's some automation mod which can greatly reduce tediousness in KSP, I'd be sold! (Not something like Mechjeb/Autopilot, I want something which allows multi-control and automating trivial maneuvers/actions/etc.)

EDIT: Added Automation != Autopilot

Wanted to say that Automation != Autopilot.

Sadly no longer supported, this was always my favourite novelty set: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/index.php?/topic/53486-024-bargain-rocket-parts-v11-bust-out-the-duct-tape-were-going-to-space/

SCANSat is best for anomaly-hunting but you might consider that 'famous' (if not, why not!?).  Same goes for Raster Prop Monitor and all its dependencies when it comes to IVA work.  Beyond that Action Groups Extended, Kerbin Konstructs, Kerbinside.

So... kOS?

Wow, I didn't know there's something like this! (I've heard that the mod exists, but don't know what is it exactly)

How much resource does the mod generally use?

Thanks, I haven't heard about those mods(except for SCANsat) ! I should look at them.

Depends on how complex the task is. If you program it intelligently, it should be fairly cheap. It only has a half-dozen parts (if that), and barely anything in terms of graphics.

You may want to acquire an external text editor, such as (free) Notepad++, (free) Vim, et cetera. The language is "Kerboscript," which has some significant differences from most "real" languages. However, profiles exist to give you a hand here.

So basically programmed launch? Impressive.

And, do you mean that the price&weight is very low? What about science requirements?

'sufficient' was not the right word.

A lot of novelty mods sadly don't have too long of a lifetime. By definition, they tend to clash with other mods in terms of theme, so they don't get that many downloads.

Here's another fine example that was really amazing while it lived:

This one was very popular and has had an unusually long development history for a novelty mod. It is sort-of a Total Conversion of KSP career mode into something that feels completely different. It still works just fine and continues to have a playerbase, but you need an older version of KSP because the mod eventually stopped following KSP's updates when the stock game added too many things that were incompatible with the concepts of BTSM.

And here's one that's actually up to date, although it is even more silly than Bargain Rocket Parts :P

Thanks! Maybe I'd wait until the VPE and BTSM might got updated..

Novel? You definitely want to use this:

Sorry but that's not interesting for me... (Actually it's very common for me, as I often encountered those on other games)

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions! I'd have enough features to play with some combinations of them.

Now I have one more question:

Are there any procedural planets mod out? I thought there might be one since at least 2 years passed since the discussion.

Depending on what you mean by 'novel', you might like to look at things like EL, along with things like UKS or Pathfinder, or an life support mod (I recommend USI-LS).  They'll add parts, but they also add significant differences to the gameplay by setting up actual colonization instead of just 'launch and retrieve'.  Life support will add quite a bit of extra things you need to think about on a mission.  (Do you have enough food?  What's the best way to carry enough food?  How about electricity, will you run out?  USI-LS also adds in habitation, so you start having to worry if you have enough space for your crew as well.)
