Hyperloop Ideas

so, i've been testing a Hyperloop mock-up in 1.1.3 (still waiting for procedural parts and tweakscale to be updated) and I want to see some other people's Hyperloop ideas, I have already had an idea to use the Kerbal Foundries hover pads in a large tube. (picture from an early test)

Would you turn off atmo effects to simulate it when in the tubes? Or is it purely aesthetic?

 

Something like this on the Mun, now that would make sense!

I heard that the idea was originally meant as a joke and when people looked into it for the lulz, well, it went too far too fast xD

Hyperloop has some very questionable things about it. It is also impossible in KSP.

First, no vactrain is possible in KSP unless you hack the atmospheric pressure down to a fraction of a percent, or delete it entirely.

Second, it's an engineering nightmare. It is not ever going to be as simple as a 600-kilometer steel tube. Maybe you could prevent thermal expansion by refrigerating the tube or something or by using less expansion-happy materials, but this is a tough thing to make.

Third, IRL, having the hyperloop above ground would be a problem because of things like terrorism, which could be as simple as some nutter with an AK-47 and steel-core rounds deciding it makes good target practice or as sophisticated as hitting it with a ballistic missile launched from another state. In any case, massive loss of life is guaranteed. It is just about the easiest terrorist target imaginable besides maybe a space fountain or space elevator.

Fourth, if you move it underground, it will probably be destroyed by earthquakes, and the price will increase by a factor of at least 5 unless someone pioneers new underground construction techniques.

Fifth, at some point, it is not going to be any more economical than a transonic or supersonic airliner that could keep pace with it without the infrastructure or the challenges or the risk of terror attacks.


Can we build it? Maybe. Should we build it? Maybe build one along Trump's border wall? No.
