Weird Munar transfer orbit plotting (1.2)

Hello All!

 

Why is this orbit plotted in such a way? Especially the magenta portion? Magenta Mun has nothing to do with where it ends up after the maneuver even though I executed the burn nearly perfectly.

If I just grab the maneuver point and rotate the planned orbit toward Mun ever so slightly all the interception symbols disappear, I'm left with a plain elliptical orbit. 

 

This is from "to The Mun pt. 1"  tutorial - v. 1.2. no mods.  I'm happy to post more screens just tell me what you need.

What I get from the picture:

1) You'll fly the orange path.

2) Get captured by the Mun, purple.

3) Then you'll leave Mun's SOI and continue your merry way, green-ish path.

Also, you seem a little "short" on that initial orbit, thou.

What's the part that's troubling you?

The way encounters and future orbits are plotted is a little tricky and it requires some practice to understand what you're seeing.

I forgot to mention this was plotted in "mode 4" which I can't seem to understand. is there a good write-up somewhere explaining what each of these modes is useful for? I since chose mode 2 as it seems most convenient to me but I should certainly know how all of them are meant to be used.

Mostly that I don't know why predicted Mun is plotted at that spot and overall I can't seem to understand in what way mode 4 is even helpful.

"Short" in the sense that you might want more speed so your Ap is higher. But looking at these other pictures you posted, then no, your speed is alright, I was fooled by the perspective. Also that's why Reactordrone said the projected mun looked like it was "off" its orbit.

About mode 4... yeah, conics patch modes is one of those things that many times depend solely on personal preference.

If it's of any help, here's a comparison (old but probably still the same except for graphics) of the different modes for the same orbit.
