initRotation and node_stack

Does initRotation impact how stacked nodes get attached?  Is it supposed to?

I have some modded lander legs that include a node_stack for convenience (strategically lined up with a node_stack on the part they're intended to mate with).

Without initRotation, you pick up the leg off the toolbox and it is oriented "wrong" (easily fixed with a single tap of E) but attaches to the mating node correctly:

If I add initRotation, the leg is oriented correctly when picked up from the toolbox, but then mates to the target node at the wrong angle:

Is there any documentation around for initRotation?  Is it weird that it affects the direction at which your nodes mate?

(ps. Yes, I know that target node is floating out in the middle of nowhere :-) )
