Help me launch this Shuttle

Recommended Posts

Hello, fellows!

In my 1.1.2 career I need to rescue somebody with his debris from the orbit of the Mun. I don't want to build sth. with a 10m heatshield, grabbing the debris and then landing on Kerbin. I want to do a shuttle with a cargo bay. I could install some 2.5m cargo bay mods but that is too easy and after 1,5 years KSP playtime I'm still new to the topic SSTO.

I came up with this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4uu21mghca24r3k/MK3 Shuttle.craft?dl=0

But every time I launch, if with RCS or only SAS it keeps falling to the side. What do I do wrong?

Thanks for the help

How are you CoT and CoM aligned? How does that alignment change as you burn through your fuel?

Also, are you actually launching that with it starting rotated 45 degrees off of a cardinal direction? Rotating it so that "up" for the shuttle is 90deg might help some.

Ah so you mean the nav ball is facing a different angle? Well you usually want to go up and turn over where it says 90 on the nav ball. If you are lifting off and your shuttle keeps spinning out of control, then you want to align the COM with the COL.

Also I see you went with the American design. For beginners, I would suggest going with the Russian Buran design. Much easier to control during ascent.

Ok, so I now managed to get to orbit, I rotated it so it flips to the east and at the start I had to press 's' all the time. Before that, I had to press 's+d' so it was now way easier. As soon as I hit the higher part of the atmosphere, I could fully control the shuttle.

Here are is a picture: (Kerbal Engineer is buggy)hrE4T1V.png

I had half of the fuel left but Kerbal Engineer was buggy. I fixed that now.

Through your help that Kerbal could possibly be safe.  For the landing I'll try a 90km AP and 40km PE. Let's hope it doesn't burn up.
