Someone help me rescue Halley Kerman

Poor old Halley, he took the loss of Jeb and friends hard.

But he bounced back, he rose to the top of class in Kerbonaut Academy, and eventually was selected to be the first Kerbal on the Mun.

Everything went as it should, until he lowered the landers legs, to find they didn\'t project below the engine.

He survived the impact, but now looks on in vain as his home world sails below the horizon, and the Dark Side of the Mun creeps ever closer.

Can he be rescued?

Yes. I just mounted a rescue mission and am on my way back. My only mistake was to not use the 3 man capsule so i had to put him on the ladder. No time warp. So use the larger capsule.

OK 2 things, (cos I\'m quite terrible at this game)

1) Do I just dump a Kerbal at the launch pad before taking off to make space for Halley?

2) How in the hell do I arrange to land at the same place I dropped Halley? Hard enough for me just to get to the Mun ;P

yes

You might want to walk (run) him off the pad.

Keep trying.

Use quicksave/quickload.

I\'d use the 3-man pod and take a guy out to make an extra seat for Halley.

Retro and prograde until you get into a nice orbit, and burn in the proper directions to rotate your orbit, or warp like crazy until your orbit spins around the mun and lines up if you don\'t want to waste the fuel. Then go to the opposite side of where you want to land and retrograde until your orbit reaches a landing point.

At least that\'s how I do it. I usually land within a few hundred meters to two KM depending on my luck.

Nice looking lander! I\'ve never managed to land safely anything that high, though... Good job!

Use quicksave/quickload.

There is quicksave/quickload??? Crap... I know I will be using this now... One thing I loved about KSP is that if you crash, you crash. But now...

1. Do that if possible. My rescue rockets are sometimes fall apart if they stay on the launchpad too long, so I often EVA kerbals towards Kerbin while in space.

2. Get in an orbit around the Mun, then change the inclination so that it passes over your stranded kerbal. Decelerate in time to land in the area of the stranded kerbal, then adjust. My current designs often have two stages landed, so I can land with one, then go somewhere else with the other. You want to end up within about 15 km of the kerbal if it has jetpack fuel and you can EVA well, or within ~200 m if he has no fuel.

quicksave f5, quickload f9.

Yeah I stuck 8 legs on it and came down at <3m/s, still a bit ropey as i landed on a slight slope, but landed it in the end :)

Just got to summon the effort to walk Halley across the Mun now!

If Halley has enough jet pack fuel, you could always try to thrust him into a small orbit with destination your rescue rocket, but... It could be really really risky, I don\'t know which speed he could get and if the jet pack would be enough (or have enough fuel) to slow him back down before landing. Would make the trip shorter...

I\'ve never tried this myself, nor do I know if it\'s possible at all, but if you try, don\'t blame me for the results!!!

UNfortunately he has very little jetpack fuel left :(

On the way to the Mun the crazy guy wanted to do a 'wing walk' or some such maneuver. Ground control told him it was nuts, but he said 'What\'s the worst that can happen?'

Also the silly superstitious little guy had heard some rumours about Munoliths and magic arches and figured since he was gonna be there for a while, might as well have a wonder and do some sightseeing!.

So unfortunately he\'s gotta walk and jump a fair distance!

Maybe it\'s better, for Halley\'s sake, that he doesn\'t have enough fuel...

I guess you have three options now. If your lander has enough fuel, you could try relocating it, with the risk of having more stranded Kerbals. Or another rescue rocket and pinpoint your landing better. Or, point Halley in the right direction, place something heavy on the forward key, and go watch a movie.

Either way, post your progress and good luck!
