Hey,  does anyone know of a way of remapping controls without going back to the main menu, trying to fine tune a steering wheel, joystick and xbox controller,  taking ages

When you say tuning, are you referring to remapping the controls, or changing how responsive they are? Pardon my ignorance, but I've never controlled KSP with anything that has a joystick before.

Both, cos I want the deadzones setup right cos they're not new, a bit worn in.

And I'd like to try different setups on-the-fly, yet my save takes a while to load so thought someone may have modded around this problem already.

Hm. Well, for control responsiveness you might be able to get something by tuning control surfaces. For changing entire control schemes on-the-fly... KSP lets you store 2 sets of key bindings, but those can only be changed from the main menu, and I don't know of any mods that change that. Sorry.
