sub-assemblies don't have attach points

Recommended Posts

So for my new LP- series of landers I had to do some part re-rooting in order for the lander to hold the required amount of crew properly. I finished building it and stored it as a sub-assembly as normal. later, when I attempted to load it onto the launcher, the LP-6(having 3 large lander cans) showed up without an attachment point on its main docking port. the docking port is situated on a radial attachment point, which is situated on top of the first two landers, one of which is the parent part. what am I doing wrong?

Not sure without seeing a screenshot. But there most certainly should be one attachment node. The game won't let you save a sub-assembly if there isn't. It might not be exactly where you want it, but there should be one.

Probably what you need to do is open the file where you first built the sub-assembly and change the root part to be the docking port on top. Then save that as your sub-assembly.

Another thing I found is that you can leave the part unattached, and then change the root node on that unattached sub-assembly (the root node tool works even on red parts).  Sometimes I have to do that to change where the attachment node is

Little known fact -- you can re-root assemblies of parts that are not connected to the main vessel.

Pull you subassembly into the editor, leave it disconnected, click the mouse to drop it.  Select the re-root tool (press 4), and then you can do the normal re-root stuff on your subassembly, selecting the docking port with open node as the new root.  After it has been re-rooted, the attach node should show up properly, and you can slap it onto your launcher/booster.

Great minds think alike :)
