How to update your career save to latest KSP version

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been asked before--I can't find it with the search function.

I've always held on to old versions of KSP for months after new updates come out because they retain mod support via CKAN while the new versions take days or weeks to get my "essential mod list" updated and available. I usually only end up updating once I'm ready to let my career save go and start over. But I'm interested in updating from 1.2.1 to 1.2.2 without losing my current career. Is this possible? How is it done?

I have a rather extensive modlist on CKAN which may affect the answer to this question, so I assume this is the correct location for this post. Moderators, please feel free to move me if there's a better forum for this question!
