Scientific Publications on Space and Space Flight

I am not aware of any topic here on the boards, discussing scientific publications on space / space flight, so I just opened this one for folks that want to do something a bit more challenging than getting stuff to orbit...

Today, I found an article on the arxiv "Kinematics effects of atmospheric friction in spacecraft flybys" https://arxiv.org/abs/1701.06939

Haven't completely read it yet, but his conclusion is, that the anomalous acceleration of the spacecraft cannot be explained by atmospheric friction (i.e. aerobreaking in plain KSP language). That paper apparently still needs some work as the dimensions in the first three equations are more or less ommited (Hey, let's substract 200 from a height and then create an exponent that is not dimensionless)....

Feel free to discuss and share your own findings....

Just a remark: arxiv is a pre-print server, the papers in there are not reviewed or published.

I only did a swift fly-by of the paper. As far as i know atmospheric modeling of thermo- and exosphere is rudimentary anyway so if there is a discrepancy of a few mm/sec the models might need adjustment ...

Yep arxiv is a preprint server, however, in my area of research our papers were sent there just before submitting them to the real journal they were intended for. So it should be free of complete nonsense.

Anyways, the fact there are a few mm/s which cannot be explained needs further investigation. So, doing a few more gravity assists should be sufficient. ... Guess I just got the funding to let old geostationary satellites accelerate in the exosphere...
