The story of Planetes follows the crew of the Space Debris Section. Debris Section\'s purpose is to prevent the damage or destruction of satellites, space stations and spacecraft from collision with debris in Earth\'s and the Moon\'s orbits. They use a number of methods to dispose of the debris (mainly by burning it via atmospheric reentry or through salvage), accomplished through the use of EVA suits.

Quite interesting for KSP players who deal with space debris everyday :)

The manga is superior. Well, I can\'t really say, I just got turned off the anime after I >opened the first episode >Tanabe getting the anime schoolgirl treatment >Yuri and his wife storyline occupying the same timeslot as Tanabe is introduced etc.

Love the manga, at any rate. It\'s got a very rich storyline with great characters and is a lot more relevant and meaningful than techno-wank, which is unfortunately what I feel a lot of hard sci-fi I\'ve read turns out to be.

I agree that the manga is probably the better between the anime and manga, but they end up following such different paths by the end that I'd call them different stories altogether.

I'd highly recommend both of these though, they're quite gritty and intended to be somewhat more like what actually could happen.

I mean, Cowboy Bebop is great, worth a watch, but isn't particularly based in any plausable reality. The gates to other planets is one of my bugbears, since with them all having their own orbit this isn't particularly feasible.
