The solar orbital jeb resuce mission

Hey guys, this is my first post.

During my first attempts to get to the moon (not understanding orbits at all and somehow thinking straight lines were the way to go in space.) i decided it was probably best to just hook up a big rocket and burn straight for it. This turned out to be a terrible idea when i missed it completely and got caught by the sun.

Jeb is now hopelessly orbiting the sun at over 6,000 m/s with no fuel and little hope of ever returning home. Ive now gotten to the point where i can get a rocket to the moon and land on it/walk around but i cant seem to come up with a way to launch something up there to get jeb back in once piece and somehow overcome the suns pull. Id like a concept before i just launch more poor kerbals out into long orbits around the sun.

Any ideas on getting him home?

Switch to that flight, then press Esc - End Flight

Thats the easy way ;)

As to actually rescuing him you could make a craft that can leave Kerbins gravity and enter the suns, then try and match orbits and then when your close enough (ie under 1km) and your relative speeds are close enough EVA Jeb and get him to fly across and enter an empty crew pod. (You\'ll need one from the mods section of this forum). Then fly back to Kerbin and land.

The last solution would be VERY difficult. I managed to resuce some crew that were in low orbit around Kerbin recently, with speeds of around 2000 m/s. As to doing it with speeds of around 6000 m/s.. its not impossible but it could be done with a lot of work and patience.

Could be something to post under the challenges section of this forum.. I bet theres a few who could do it, probably not with stock parts though..

Edit: Also, welcome to the forums

It looks like you could separates all stages, activate the parachute, put it on highest warp, and go to bed. Eventually, the spacecraft will enter Kerbin\'s SOI. Unless, you\'re in an orbital resonance, in which case, you\'re screwed.

It may enter Kerbins SOI eventually but not necessarily Kerbins atmosphere to the extent that airbraking works

I'm assuming that ramming your ship with a kerbal on EVA will impart force, no matter how insignificant. If your just a command pod and chute left (and use your separation from everything else to get you started), a series of EVA's should get you going where you need to go. Another series of EVA's will drop your speed (assuming your going to get picked up) so that you hvae a shot of hitting kerbin. Would take a while, but still probably faster than sending out another ship into solar orbit, especially since your not perfectly circular right now which only complicates things.

I think i will try posting this in challenges, Ill also try the EVA thing. Jeb is just floating in a command pod at this point, there is no hope of separating to lose a bit of speed. And chances of actually getting close enough to earth at slow enough speeds are about nil. Ill need to figure out a way to get a ship out there....
