KSP Crashes on Startup

Recommended Posts

So I have had a problem with trying to start KSP. I haven't touched the game for about 5 months now and I want to start playing it again. I'm on a mac (10.16.11) and I've tried to delete the save state (the unity.Squad.Kerbal Space Program.savedState) and delete any mods I may have but it still crashes on startup (when the loading bar reaches halfway).

This is the crash report that comes up (sorry it's a bit long):

I think the thing that's happening is KSP is trying to load the wrong thing.

I would recommend reinstalling KSP, because in the setup you can choose where KSP installs to and loads from, and there might be some other problem as well that I didn't see.

I've tried that as well, once with backup files and once without.

Sorry But, what is that?

A file you will not be able to find, as you are not running Windows.

From the modded support sticky (why this is not also in unmodded support I don't know):

  Quote
  1. The Logs
These are text files that the game spits out for debugging purposes as it runs; if something broke horribly in-game, there will be something in here about it. You should upload the entire log as a file (i.e. not to pastebin); you can use dropbox or an equivalent host to upload the file. Make sure the entire file gets uploaded; you may have to zip it first, as logs can be very long. Here is where you can find the log:
    • Windows: KSP_win\KSP_Data\output_log.txt (32bit) or KSP_win64\KSP_x64_Data\output_log.txt (64bit) or %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Squad\Kerbal Space Program\output_log.txt
    • Mac OS X: Open Console, on the left side of the window there is a menu that says 'files'. Scroll down the list and find the Unity drop down, under Unity there will be Player.log ( Files>~/Library/Logs>Unity>Player.log )
    • Linux: ~/.config/unity3d/Squad/Kerbal\ Space\ Program/Player.log

That said, that crash dump looks a little more serious than something easily diagnosed with Player.log...
I'm not particularly familiar with MacOS, but it appears to be catching a SIGABRT - every one of those I've seen (on GNU/Linux) has been before the game loads far enough to create a useful Player.log.
Upload it anyway, you might get lucky. If not, hopefully there's someone around who can read Mac crash dumps... But that's not me, unfortunately.

In the crash folder, named whatever date you crashed on, it has two text files. One named, "error", and one named, "output_log" The output_log is the one we need.

On Windows, sure. You won't find that filename anywhere on *nix. You won't get a "crash folder" either, whatever that is. You might get a core dump though, if you have those enabled.

Try running 1.2.2.

Indeed. A useful test to see if it's something new in 1.3. No Unity upgrade this time, but AFAICT it does include a new native library.

Running 1.2.2 works perfeclty. I've attached the player.log in case there's a way for me to run 1.3

Unmodded?

Ok, before I go any farther... did you try a restart of the computer? Like, tell it to turn off, wait a couple of minutes, then start it back up? I would get that same Exception on MacOS and every time I did the power cycle it would fix itself.

This thread is in unmodded support... Yet you clearly have a bunch of mods installed.
Are they all 1.3 compatible? Anything that includes a .dll and is not compiled for 1.3 will almost certainly crash the game.
Install 1.3 without any mods and try again. Or stick with 1.2.2, 1.3 is the most boring update I've seen yet.

Aside, please upload log files and post a link, rather than posting inline, it makes it hard to read. Dropbox is the standard suggestion for a host.

But how do I re-install and where is 1.2.2.

Steam, Squad store or GOG?  Procedure varies.
For steam, it's under 'betas' IIUC. (I don't use steam), for the other two: Download the 1.2.2 archive, unpack it somewhere, and copy your saves over. There is no install / uninstall.

@JMin1130 The log says explicitly that 1.3 tries to load the part from that mod and crashes. If I may suggest, please:
a) remove the game completely
b) go to the folders, where game was installed (depending on your os) and make sure that game is really completely removed
c) reinstall the 1.3 game and post the log again.

It is incorrect to claim that 1.3 only provided translations, per changelog 1.3 includes a lot of bugfixes, especially regarding garbage collection (which should improve memory usage over the long play time).
If you are playing with the mods, please install either KSP-AVC or CKAN in order to automatically notify you which mods you are running and wither they are compatible.

Still, this is an non-modded game technical support thread.

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
