Hajile Challenge

Recommended Posts

a very basic challenge

the name comes from an allied project during WWII to drop light vehicles from planes using solid rocket boosters to bring it safely to the ground

so the challenge is to land a vehicle on the mun with a minimum weight of ~3-5 ton, using ONLY solid rocket boosters to land, NO LIQUID ENGINES on the descent stage

Good luck!

will post pics of personal attempts after I get back from work.

Whoa, I have tried things like this, but. . . wow. Timing would be hard, I used smaller SRBs on Minmus to land my crewed rover, but they were tiny, and I could trigger them as needed to supplement my skycrane's liquid engines. I suppose it could work, baring massive explosions. . . Jeb approved! Trying when I have a computer that runs mods. . .

the nova punch pack has a SRB that is seemingly perfect for this challenge, it's tiny yet functional

I guess in this sort of challenge the math aspect would become very useful, because with liquid engines you can at least adjust thrust or turn of the engine completely, with SRBs if you want to stick the landing you have to take into account variables such as thrust, weight, velocity, gravity of Mun, altitude from Mun

You would have to have a predictable trajectory, know exactly how much dV the SRB's burn, to know how long the burn time is and to fire them precisely with a few seconds margin of error. All that is do able except for the predictable trajectory. You change the trajectory even a little bit and your craft will be too fast/slow post SRB burn.
