Master
Is there any way to SAS an unmanned rocket so that it will fly straight with an engine burn?I would like to do two things.First, I would like to retro burn my boosters so that they fall out of orbit and engage parachutes.Secondly, I would like to launch a rocket (missile) straight down towards Kerbal. i can get it to fire just fine but once it is detached and crewless the SAS turns off and it corkscrews without actually going anywhere. pebble_garden
Szyzyg did a clever thing by adding engines at a slight angle to spin-stabilize his unmanned rockets. Lemme find the link: http://youtu.be/HCNlflln_FYand http://youtu.be/ZD2_a7xdy_YHope that helps!
Khrissetti
if you download the Mechjeb addon you can attach a small MJ module to any stages you want to separate, afterwards, you can switch to them and order the parts to do things via MechJeb. samstarman5
But to answer your question: no. The SAS and ASAS modules do not work for detached or unmanned modules. I would encourage you to watch the Szyzyg(Scott Manley) videos posted in this thread as he goes through a number of iterations trying to launch unmanned rockets into orbit. That should help give you ideas. Bear in mind that this guy is an actual rocket scientist. It pays to listen to him.Mechjeb is a good choice, as it does just about everything but wash the kitchen sink. Bear in mind it is a user made mod and therefore isn't kept up to date as quickly as the updates. Any little change in an official update can create hiccups. With the new forum design, finding where it is might be a bit tricky. Just explore the Add-ons portion a bit.Squad has already mentioned ideas on a stock autopilot for unmanned missions, so save your energy on suggesting it to them. illectro
Wow, sorry I (Scott Manley/szyzyg) have to step in and correct a myth, I'm not a rocket scientist. I studied astrophysics for a decade and worked in the field of small body dynamics, so I learned a lot of orbital mechanics. I also specifically studied the problem of intercepting asteroids with spacecraft so that's my background.I still work with astronomy part time, but my day job is in data mining social networks. It pays a lot more than astrophysics Edited August 13, 2012 by illectro
