Why do the buttons sometimes freeze?

Recommended Posts

I am having a small issue with buttons freezing. By that I mean if you click on a strut or cockpit or Kerball and then try to click the follow up button for say 'Crew report' or Take sample, etc, then the button freezes. You can click close no problem, just the action buttons. Now if you save and reload the buttons all work fine. I am using the latest version. Not a big issue as you can save and reload, but anyone know why it is happening?

Do you use the Enter key when you create quicksaves? That is one way to lock up the buttons -- which is about to be fixed in the upcoming patch release. If you are playing stock and have found another way to lock them up, then there's a reproduction step missing in your description.;)

There's also the possibility that you need to clear your input lock stack.

Hit Alt-F12, expand the console section, go to Input Locks, and hit "Clear Input Locks".

It's something I have to do every so often, though that's probably mostly because I'm buried under mods.

Ok I will try that. It is the stock game only. Not sure what a reproduction step is - sorry!

When talking about "reproduction" in the context of software development, what it means is basically a step-by-step guide on how to cause (or "re-produce") a bug or problem. The exact sequence of actions and button presses you were doing since the loading of the save file that led you to experiencing the problem. In particular, you yourself should be able to reliably get the error everytime you go through these steps again. It should work not just once, but every time you try it.

If you give that kind of step-by-step guide to a developer, he will be able to see the error happen live on his screen, which increases the chance of it getting fixed by like fifty million times

Alternatively, the developer will tell you that the reproduction steps did not lead to an error for him. In that case, you know that the problem must be on your end, and that perhaps a clean reinstallation of the game might fix it.

Ok - got it.

Well all i can say is there seemed to be no rhyme or reason for the errors. They appear at different intervals, so unless I record all my actions I doubt I could recreate the error. Having said that I will try and see what I can find out.

Well, all I can say is that I've hit all the buttons in 1.3.0 hundreds of times over the last few months, and I have never seen the error you describe. It's also not reported in the bugtracker by anyone else.

So one thing you may want to check -- did you get the game from steam? If so, have you done a file verification on your game?

Yes it is from Steam.

What is a file verification?

In the steam client, in the Library, right click on Kerbal Space Program. Select Properties/Local Files/Verify Integrity of Game Files. Steam will do a quick verification of all the files, and redownload any that are missing/wrong.

If it found some, then you try again to see if you can make the error happen at all.
