KSP thinks I have no saved craft for the VAB- thumbnails

I click the load button in the VAB to load a spacecraft and the game hangs for a moment or two, then shows a completely empty folder...I have about 30 or so spacecraft in the VAB. I've even gone to the KerbalSpaceProgram\Ships\VAB directory and I do actually have them all, but the game won't show them.
I opened the console right before clicking the load craft button, and it seems that no thumbnail exists for any of my spacecraft. The console also says Exception: FormatException: Unkown char: s
Is there a way to retrieve the thumbnails, make my own, or just generally fix this problem?

(This post has nothing to do with mods but the forums page seemed to indicate that regardless, if it was a modded game put it in the modded section, so I did.)
