Vessel spins after EVA, even after reset trim.

Recommended Posts

Immediately after EVAing from any non-landed vessel, the ship starts spinning until the kerbal is thrown off the ladder.  I disabled reaction wheels and reset trim, but it did not help.    This is a fresh install of ksp with no mods.

Part of this is caused by colliders / collisions -- while the kerbal is on the ladder, he is still colliding with the pod;  in Unity, when things collide, they are pushed apart based on the position of collision.  This imparts a torque to the pod, and thus it spins.  Kerbals themselves also receive the opposite force, but as they are glued to the ladder by 'magic forces', it is mostly negated, resulting in a net gain of force/torque to the pod.

It can be more or less pronounced depending on the particular part, its collider arrangement, and how the ladder collider is positioned relative to the part colliders.

This is the crux of the 'ladder-drive'.  Free propulsion just by having a kerbal on a ladder.

What Squad really needs to do is to disable collisions between the kerbal and the part that has the ladder on it as long as the kerbal is attached to the ladder.  If/when the kerbal lets go, he should be positioned -very slightly outside- of the collision bounds, so as to not cause problems with clipping/ejection.

All I have is a MK1 pod and a parachute.  Does everyone have this same problem?  I've never seen it in any videos.  When I say spinning, I don't mean a mild rotation, I mean almost every second it flips 360.

Yep, happens to everyone eventually.  It's one of the main reasons I no longer build craft without an alternate means of control if I'm going to be going EVA from said craft.  I make sure to turn on SAS before going EVA, but if you don't have either a pilot or a probe core that will maintain stability it will turn off as soon as you go EVA and you end up spinning.
