Cars or kerbin rovers, landers sitting at odd angles

Recommended Posts

Sometimes I have cars or kerbin rovers, or landers sit at odd angles.  Like if I have a lander land on a slope itll tend to lean closer to 0 degrees instead of straight up from the angle its on, or mabey a little downhill from the lower springs being pushed down more.  And Ive had cars stay leaning one direction after braking speeding up or turning.  Whats causing this?  Ive seen the suspensions can adjust very slowly the springs and dampers if something changes.  Or is this the Unity Physx spring and damper issues causing this?  I cant figure out a way to build something and find out

This is a problem because, if you have a lander thats leaning, and it starts to bounce, it can fall over

I know I have this to.

This is kind of normal, especially if your craft is very heavy. Like a lander full of fuel, especially on Kerbin since it has greater gravity.
Landing legs simply aren't very strong in the vanilla game. If it leans to much you might want to install a few more legs or angle them differently as that may also help.

We have to use dampener and spring to absorb impact collisions.

When any of the landing legs are pushed to their maximum suspension by leaning it will generally bounce with the surface if the spring setting is to low.
The higher the mass of your craft, the greater the spring setting should be. Do you still run into this problem at max spring settings, then you need more legs.
The 'dampener' and 'spring' settings are very arbitrary, I or anyone else can't evaluate these settings into logical numbers. You'll have to see what works for you.

Also know that the landing gear qualities are optimized for all planets, not just Kerbin. There are more worlds with less gravity rather then with greater gravity, thus on most worlds you want very generous amount of suspension and the settings provided in the menus are scaled so it can be optimized everywhere. Unfortunately that means just strapping landing legs with default suspension settings on a heavy craft landed on Kerbin is not always the best thing to do.

Furthermore, it may look foolish. But you can also use landing gear as landing legs. They're a lot sturdier, in magical ways I must add.
