Drop-off permanent habitation module (for mun bases)

Recommended Posts

Today I started to build up my first mun base with dropping off a permanent habitation module, basically a crewtank on landerlegs, on the mun. The spacecraft I used to do this is 100% stock (except the crewtank of course).

It is able to get into a 100km orbit, transfer to the Mun, manouver, land, disconnect the habitation module and return safe to Kerbin. The booster/transfer stage is not very fuel efficient at the moment (onion peel design) but you can fly it at 100% thrust ....so without cheating/exploiting the fuel bug. (I made all my manouvers at max speed except for minimal course corrections).

In my first mission I dropped a module next to a crashed Mun-lander to save the stranded crew and give them shelter.

Right now these guys have been rescued already by a rescue(crewtank)ship capable of landing on kerbin with the rescue-tank attached.

So the crew in the habitation module you see on the screenshot consists of 2 rescue-ship pilots, which took over the station while the remaining pilot rescued the remaining 3 stranded astronauts, and the "classic crew" which has just landed in a standard munar lander design. (Next part of mission is deploying a rescue-ship near the base (8 seats in total, 5 PAX, 3 Pilots, same design I used earlier). While the pilots of the rescue vessel will return to Kerbin using the standard lander (in background).

Ship can be flown without leaving garbage in space, even without exploiting the fuel bug.

---You need DYJcrewtank1.2 to get this thing working---

--To the creator of the crewtank mod: thank you man I waited so long for that--

Anyways long story short: here are the pics and the .craft:

I like the rescue craft. I used the same basic idea of a crew tank lander. I was hoping it could detach and return on its own but sadly when you detach the parachutes either are failed or activated or something so that idea went belly up.

Does yours make a powered landing or parachutes?

The rescue craft makes a normal parachute landing (capsule+crewtank, works only on solid ground not in water) ....4 parachutes attached to the crewtank.

I will post the design later

you can detach the tank when in atmosphere after the chutes on the tank are open, and activate a chute on your capsule ....but sadly they fall at different speed ......so once you get 2.5km away one of the crafts despawn ..... so i made it a combined landing. but it might be possible to detach the craft as soon as the chutes are fully open....that might work (the craft always turns itself up (capsule on top) at latest when the chute opens completely.) but as I said the rescue craft can land from any angle as a combined craft without problems (on land, touchdown speed 7m/s

)
