Build a replica of Nova's wierd ship and put it into 150 Km Kerbin orbit.

So Nova built this really weird rocket and put a picture of it in the 0.17 fan thread. He gave no explanation.

Your job is to try and build a replica of this ship and put it into orbit. Ap. and Pe. must be above 150 Km.

Maybe by using the ship we will get some idea of what it's for!

well seeing as how it's nova's ship, it's most likely used to get to the Red Planet and the other ones as well

I mean look at all that fuel, you would only need that for inter-planetary injection burns.

from what I can tell, here's the breakdown

1.lowermost tanks are for interplanetary burns, this ejects when spent

2.solid booster is for braking maneuvers, an SRB would probably be best because of the sheer amount of deltaV's it would have to displace.

3. atmospheric descent, the modules under the command pod is probably a new crew tank(I think those are windows on the side) and maybe a new S.A.S below that.

but that's all I got, I have no idea why the landing stage is supposed to decouple, or why there is a structural fuselage(or is that jet fuel?) hiding on the right side.

It looks like mostly stock parts(minus the needle like part and the new parts), I'll try this once I get off of work

You got it exactly right, except the thing is impossible to fly :P

but why does the descent stage decouple??

That's an easy one, the top of the rocket actually lands it, and lifts it off the other planet. Or, if Nova feels particularly evil, he likely uses it as a skycrane, ejecting it to fly off into the atmosphere with more than enough fuel to get into orbit, being wasted. While the lander sits there... doing landery type stuff.

So I built this abomination... I had to substitute some parts I could not Identify.

but here it sits on the pad.

The space Kraken took a keen interest in this ship and decided to start screwing with it as soon as it was out of the atmosphere, so I ejected some of my ascent stage early in an attempt to regain control, but that just made them angrier. Didn't have enough thrust to get into orbit though, so I came in for a "landing"

So... my guess as to why you posted that picture in the 0.17 thread... was to brag about the Kraken fix. lol :P

I would like to point out that module just below the cockpit does not exist. By all rights, as it stands, it is a puller rocket. The front bits drive it sucking fuel from rear. You dump the rear and work forwards. Definitely a skycrane with what I am guessing is an IVA or science module. Below the science module, just before the solid stage is some sort of adapter. Cannot build it exactly, but I like the design. Alas, in that state, not exactly returnable, so will need to tweak to my own accord.

The lack of symmetry on that ship is disturbing ;)

My experience with skycranes in KSP ( see here for the most successful design so far ) showed me that in general ships pulled by engines are ridiculously sensitive to lateral tilting, even if the ship is perfectly symmetrical. I can only imagine how bad can a 2 engine ( extra sensitive ) nonsymmetrical ship can be :D
