Is it risky to run 1.4.x mods with 1.4.4?

I've backed up my save file, but I'm worried that 1.4.2, 1.4.3... etc. mods might break my saves. 

If they do not, is there a chance that they will break what I've built once they finally update to 1.4.4?

Under normal circumstances it is not an issue.  There are a few mods that are version locked (Kerbal Kostructs RSS/RO, and a few others), but the major changes occurred in KSP version 1.4.  If you have backed up your save file, it is likely safe to install the new version (1.4.4)  I would recommend backing up your old game version just in case you run into problems and want to revert to the earlier version.

Just want to mention that kopernicus is version locked as well and it is a pretty important mod.

No dude, 1.4.x is meant to run with all 1.4 versions

Please stop spreading misinformation .... I see people offering advice to forum users in a number of threads, and although I think its is awesome that these people are willing to help and offer advice, if the person offering the advice doesn't know what they are talking about then the misinformed advice ends up confusing the issue

If someone knows something for sure then they should speak up and help, but if said person is unsure or doesn't know what they are talking about then all that is accomplished is confusion for the person seeking help

There are a few mods out there that are version locked as well as a few others that worked great up to 1.4.3 but the changes made in 1.4.4 broke some of their functionality

Huh, i thought 1.4.x compatible menas that it runs from 1.4.0 to 1.4.99.

The general rule is what you said, however as was being explained to the user who asked the question, the update from 1.4.3 to 1.4.4 broke some mods when it shouldn't have
