Greetings. I'm addicted and frustrated already!

Hello folks. I'm Arthwys and I'm already addicted to this game and determined to get to Mun. That being said I'm no engineer or mathematician so I'm finding myself going through a lot of parts and astronauts as I'm failing to come up with a proper design for the craft. I've seen some of the vids posted on youtube by members of this community showing multiple booster stages that don't incinerate the vessel, so I know it's possible, but I seem to be missing something.

Any suggestions any of you feel like sharing, feel free.

It's nice to be here all the same.

Cheers

Arthwys

Check your staging maybe? The list down the right side of the interface in the VAB shows the sequence things will work on. It starts at the bottom and works up. If you want to delay firing of an engine or a decoupler you can move it up the sequence.

Start small and set yourself some targets that you can tick off. You don't have to learn everything all at once. Try making some rockets that do some simple things such as:

  • A single stage rocket that you can practice flying. Learn what SAS/ASAS does and how to fly manually. Try to get your rocket flying right down the 90 degree line on the navball.
  • A simple rocket with two stages
  • Same rocket with some solid rocket boosters strapped to it for an extra stage

Jump on Youtube and check out the videos posted by one of the forum members here, he goes by szyzyg on Youtube and posted some really good videos on how to do all sorts of stuff. He tends to use nice simple rockets that you can copy easily.

What you'll want to do is get in a parallel orbit with Mun with a bunch of fuel to spare, then wait until the right moment and increase your forward speed until your elliptical orbit intersects that of Mun. You'll want to do this opposite in your orbit from where you want to go. Which is about 45-50 ish degrees ahead of where it is when you begin. Watch out for the speed as it gets really sensitive once you've reached escape velocity. Also, if your orbit is off vertically you can change the angle by accelerating perfectly perpendicular up or down to it. If you're too slow you can maybe fix it by speeding up inside the Mun's path, kind of like you'd do if you were to try and catch up with someone on foot or in a car chase.

Try not to come in too hot, and watch out that your rocket doesn't tip over and split into little pieces with no fuel left. Which may or may not have happened to me. <<
