Internal antennas and CommNet

Recommended Posts

Hello,

First post here, but I have found a lot of help here on previous difficulties. Didn't find anything with the search function this time, though I might have just missed it. My problem is I tried to get to Minmus, but a little over halfway the probe didn't connect to CommNet anymore. I have a relay network over Minmus, and my tracking station is upgraded, so the probe should have been in comms range. I started thinking whether the internal antennas on probe cores can connect to relays or are they direct connection to KSC only? The vessel didn't have an external antenna so I was relying on the internal antenna all the way.

The relay network also isn't exactly perfect. Just two relays on equatorial orbit and one on polar orbit, but I don't think that was the problem.

Oh and I am using some mods (USI-Life Support, TRP-Hire, KIS, KAS and Kerbal Engineer).

Hi and welcome to the forums. I will just link the Wiki and a thread from yesterday, should include all infos that u need. If u put one of the first antennas u should be good to go

Thanks. I had read the wiki through and through already and from that info I figured that the probe cores work just the same as any antenna. Also couldn't find the info on the thread either. I understand roughly how the CommNet system works and how to calculate signal strengths etc. which is why I was so puzzled with this problem. I did another test run with the same vessel and this time had no hiccups (other than warping too fast during descent and crashing to Minmus :sticktongue:) so I think the problem really was that all the relays were blocked. The odds were pretty small so I guess I just got lucky.:o

But to answer my own question: the probe core's internal antenna can access CommNet through relays. It would be pretty silly if they couldn't.

This whole problem has again taught me to press F5 at regular intervals!
