About the Asteroid capture tutorial (part 1)

Recommended Posts

I think there is a typo in one of the explanation, or maybe in the french translation.

It says : Once you are at 5 min from asteroid encounter, go to target mode, align your ship with the anti-target and try to reach a relative speed of 0.0 m/s

But if you do that, you will never reach 0.0 m/s speed, I think the correct advice is "go to target mode and head to retrograde", this is the way to reach 0.0 m/s

I had some rly frustrating tries, just because of this typo (or mistranslation).

Yes, those sound like typos. It is true that a very large number of players are not completely fluent in English.

Capturing asteroids is a pretty extreme form of rendezvous maneuver, so you have to be pretty good at rendezvous maneuvers in the first place before you make a serious attempt at it. Those two typos sound like things that a rendezvous expert would consider pretty obvious, and would probably ignore.

From your thread title I can't tell exactly which tutorials you mean -- but you might want to "ping" the author of the tutorials here, by typing an @ symbol, then partially typing their name, then selecting them from the dropdown list. The author can fix the typos.

In any case, you want the anti-target and retrograde markers almost exactly on top of each other in target mode, until your last kilometer -- when you really want them to diverge just a bit ;) . After that, yes, you want retrograde, not anti-target.

Hi, thanks for your answer, I think you don't see what I'm talking about though : I'm not talking about a tutorial which would have been made by a player and which would have typos, I'm talking about the official basic tutorials (practice) called "Asteroid capture part 1".

I don't think you need to be expert when u have the proper explanations, it's rly straight forward.

Ah. Exactly which version of the game? Current 1.5.1? And are you using the english localization when playing (or are you translating from some other language)?

Tristan, the original English text says what you expected. It is written in an unusual way that probably tricked a translator working quickly.

Spoiler

#autoLOC_308794 = And this is where speed and efficiency are key. Wait until you're about 5 minutes away from your encounter.  Click the velocity meter in your navball until it is in target mode and so displays your relative velocity to your target. You're moving at roughly the same speed, but even a small difference will cause you to drift apart.
Turn the ship target-retrograde and use your boosters or RCS thrusters to lower that velocity to 0.0 m/s [...]

Many of us here have signed ourselves up to the bug-tracker.  One of us having the French version of KSP could report the errors there, to maybe get a correction for new francophone players in the future.

The original English for part-2 says the same as your translation of the French, but it makes no sense to me.  I suspect that an earlier version of "Asteroid Redirect - Part 2" put the asteroid outside Kerbin's SOI, so the trainee had to return to Kerbin from orbit around the Sun; now the asteroid is in orbit of Kerbin, making the training quicker.

Spoiler

#autoLOC_309060 = While you could start setting up maneuver nodes and burning in order to move that heavy load of yours right now, it would come at a great fuel cost, so it's better to plan a more efficient approach.
Open your map, set Kerbin as your target, and find the point where Kerbin's orbit is closest to yours, then set up a maneuver node OPPOSITE to that, on the far side of your orbital path. This is when you will be at your lowest velocity, making it that much easier to adjust your orbit.

Among the many features of KSP, Training and Scenarios are relatively low-quality.

No, it's the french official localization.

I will see what I can do about getting the phrases improved, but no promises. The devs have many priorities for changes and fixes in the game, and some things end up getting assigned a low priority -- so sorry, but that's the reality of the situation.

Yeah, well, I think training is good and reaching its goal (except this translation issue). That's the only thing I find interesting in the game (now trying Making History missions). I'm not interested in trying sandbox things with no precise goals.
