Mirage Industries, High Technology for all fields.

The following is a showcase for all Mirage Industry crafts. After playing KSP for a fair amount of time I've decided to release many of my designs. Looking forward to conversations on the designs and any changes people think should be made. Each craft will have a hanger image, description (with a bit of fiction to provide some background), and mods used. A mediafire folder link will be at the bottom of the post with all craft files stored.

R Series craft

R-1

The R-1 was Mirage's earliest plane to see general prototype use. It was quickly passed up due to inefficiencies in the design. Capable of reaching space, but SSTO was never fully tested due to it being a single man (or kerman) ship. R-2 was already in development by the time the second space flight touched down. Several are still used as training aircraft and one is currently on display in the lobby of Mirage's newest corporate park.

R-2 Arkbird

The need to send a full research team into space resulted in the R-2's extremely quick construction. Kerbal engineers worked 24/7 and had a working prototype in just under 2 weeks. Of course Jeb wanted his crew to be the first team into space and took the first R-2 in a SSTO from KSC's runway...without permission. After a near collision with the final flight of the R-1, Jeb successfully got the R-2 into a 120K orbit. As punishment for launching without permission in a largely untested craft, Jeb, Bill, and Bob were ordered to conduct an experiment on the effects of the Kerman body for extended periods in weightlessness. This period of nearly 2 months allowed Mirage to concentrate efforts on a Space plane that could land on the Mun...without having to listen to Jeb's constant requests for more SRBs.

R-3

Thanks to Jeb's R-2 mishap/success, Mirage's lead scientists were able to create the R-3 without too many mishaps (outside of the usual lab fires and engine test explosions). Unable to get a SSTO plane with enough power to get to orbit with the Mun and land safely, a new type of launch was required. With a large powered drop tank to assist atmospheric escape success was almost assured. Everything was going according to plan as the first R-3 began final approach at the Mun...untill upon touchdown the pilot made a serious error causing this...

As mission control began to panic and scramble a rescue mission Jeb simply mutters:"Bob can fly better than this fool."

R-4

After the mishaps on the Mun, Mirage launched a space construction platform. Along with that, they designed a multi-man plane to be used for rescue missions if they ever happen again. Originally to be named Hope, however many test pilots nicknamed it hopeless due to being an incredibly dense and sluggish aircraft.

Notes: Do not launch from KSC. Use space built to launch.

R-5 AWACS

Mirage's All weather long range aircraft was seen by many at KSC as a waste of time money and effort. However the R-5 was launched after the R-12 picked up strange readings originally thought to only be on the Mun. Its long range allowed the discovery of several monoliths originally thought to only be on the Mun. Shortly after 2 more were requested by KSC.

R-6

Mirage was in a slump for ideas on a new ship, so they had a sweepstakes with the grand prize being a trip to Mirage HQ to help design a brand new ship. What they weren't expecting to happen was for Jebediah Kerman to rig the contest...Originally the design used 2 SRBs for propulsion. Needless to say several thousand kerbal dollars were wasted before Jeb finally relented to using "wimpy liquid fuel" engines. The design did however allow the center fuselage to be easily attached to almost every rocket in Jeb's arsenal. Simply remove the rear center nosecone, place a decoupler and attach it to the front of the rocket for a vertical launch at Jeb speed.

R-7

After the shinanigans Jeb brought to Mirage's workshops, the scientists discovered something...they still haven't told everyone else what. All we know is that the next craft they rolled out of the skunk works was one of the most successful SSTO planes they ever made. At first it seemed doomed during its first launch as it seemed to wobble like a wet noodle into space, however once out of the atmosphere it demonstrated extreme control and power getting into orbit with plenty of fuel to make it to both the Mun and Minmus. But with it being a very long craft and learned from the mistakes with the R-3 opted not to equip it for landings. Instead it was used for light lifting and for refueling the numerous space pumps now in orbit. Once interplanetary travel is perfected it may only need slight adjustments and a quick refuel to get to other planets and land (so long as they have an atmosphere and a place to land that is)

R-8

R-8WIP.png

Although the R-7 was incredibly successful as a light lifting SSTO, a new craft needed to be designed to provide parts for the Space dock. However the scientists went too big on this one...its huge wings and fuselage have proven to be difficult to hold together. Still in prototype stage to this day, it's unsure if Mirage will ever see the R-8 make it to production

R-9

R-9.png

When KSC requested a "unique" plane for their airshow, Mirage had an answer. The R-9 had been sitting in the design room since the development of the R-2. With no real purpose other than looking really cool it was left at the concept stage. However thanks to funding from KSC, this concept finally taxied onto the runway. In fact the prototype was finished only 2 days prior to the airshow. Jebediah personally requested to fly it...untill he found out it had no SRBs, homing missles, decouplers, or explosives of any sort.

R-10

R-10.png

With the need to transfer crew from space station to space station the R-10 was developed. Designed to be built in space with as few parts as possible and still be able to survive re-entry and land at KSC. It is the second smallest craft ever developed by Mirage. Bill however claims that it strangely has the largest and most comfortable cockpit.

Disappointed in the R-9's performance at the previous airshow, Jebediah kerman invaded the Mirage skunk works and demanded the fastest and most maneuverable plane they could make. The R-11 rolled onto the tarmac 5 months later with Jeb, of course, as its first test pilot. Before clearance was granted he jammed the throttle to maximum...only to realize a slight bug in the system. Until the engines fully wound up the plane simply refused to move. As Jeb was about to scream at the engineer in charge it suddenly roared down the runway. Pulling back hard on the stick it launched into the air like no craft Mirage had ever produced before. During full bank turns the G meter went off the charts. Landing shortly after Jeb opened the canopy and said: "I need more speed."

Secretly Mirage had been working on getting a new pair of high powered liquid engines working. Hearing that their problem was the throttle wouldn't shut off Jeb simply scoffed and said: "Then I'll just run out of fuel before I land." The engines were attached just in time for the next air show. Using the R-11RS Jeb screamed past the audience at over 500m/s at a mere 100 meters off the ground. The resounding applause for the stunt was quickly drowned out by the subsequent sonic boom which shattered the control tower's glass windows. Since that incident all windows at KSC are required to be made from reinforced plexiglass...

R-12

R-12.png

With KSC's need to update their maps of Kerbin, Mun and Minmus, Mirage provided a new ship. Launched from the space dock in orbit, this small plane began a 2 month long mission to create the most precise maps possible. However when it suddenly returned almost a full month early, the scientists and engineers at KSC were baffled. The pilot's reason for returning early without warning? "I finished everything early but was afraid you guys would give me more stuff to do."

Just released from the skunk works at Mirage, the R-14 is currently undergoing test flights to determine its limitations. One of its future objectives is a Mun and Minmus landing.updates as development continues

Going to need to edit the mod list at the bottom of each plane with new links. Didn't realize the C7 flight pack is no longer being updated but can be found at KSPyard. I'll go through, hunt them all down and each each description with the parts for each plane.

No, Mirage is a small in house team (literally room-mates) between me and a couple friends (who don't use this board). We're still going through all of the R series planes trying to get them to work in .17 (not much luck). Also might have to retire them since I can't find the old mods I used for them. Currently we're testing out a new series that utilizes the most recent version of the Novapunch pack, however with 50+ hours a week at my job for the past month I haven't had time to update this page or work on the project.
