Decoupler atached to docking port

Recommended Posts

So I made a dumb dumb and put a decoupler between the docking ports of my Duna transfer stage and lander, meaning that when I decouple it will stay attached to the docking port on the transfer stage (which I planned to redock with to return to kerbin).

I assume I wont be able to dock through it?

Is it possible to blow up the decoupler with my rocket exhaust without doing the same to the docking port?

Other wise I could attempt to land with the transfer stage and relaunch but I don't think it'll have the TWR to lift off with the lander atop.

Now my lander does have 2600m/s delta V, can I make it down to the surface and back to kerbin? (I was hoping to hop a biome or two, but its not essential to the mission), landing will be on parachutes with a power assisted touchdown but I cant remember the exact delta V requirements to return.

How would you clever clogs work around this foolish oversight, I'll be testing out my options later but any insight will be helpful?

It is possible to blow up the decoupler but that depends on the engine, typically you require a powerful engine to create the necessary heat plus the necessary gimbal on that engine to blast the exhaust unto the decouplers edge due to a decoupler being hollow.

If that fails you always have "Object thrower

LEFT ALT + F12 (RIGHT SHIFT + F12, Unix and MAC) to open "Cheats" menu. Click the "Cheat" arrow to unfold the cheat pane on the left side. Click Object thrower from the list. Put size and speed to lowest and leave mass to default. Check "unarmed" to swap to "armed"

Press F5 to save or use save function to create seperate save. Rotate camera on the ship so that the decoupler is in view but not obstructed by anything else. Click middle mouse button to release object to destroy the decoupler. If it doesn't then increase "speed" on the object thrower.
If ship starts to rotate due to torque induced by the object thrower after the decoupler is destroyed simply use the "." button to forward speed time acceleration to stop vessel rotation.
Continue docking both vessels together :)

Docking ports have the ability to undock one time from something that is not a docking port.

So if I understand your situation correctly: once you separate these craft by decoupling, right click on the docking port that still has the decoupler attached to it, and click "decouple node". I think that'll do it.

Well my lander is using a vector (its pretty heavy) so that should work!

I'd rather not use the cheat menu if I can avoid it :)
