You think your graphics card is better than it is when you play KSP?

Recommended Posts

The problem isn't a graphics card issue so much. I mean, I play BF3 on high settings with an average 40FPS+, but on KSP, fly a ship that's barely capable of reaching the moon, and you'll be getting a slideshow.

The issue is KSP has to do LOTS of calculations to figure out gravity, drag, mass, trajectory, how parts interact, collisions, landscape, etc. There's a lot to do. But the problem is that KSP is on the Unity engine, which unfortunately is single-threaded. I mean, my computer has two processors, each with four cores and then hyperthreading to boot (doubles the possible threads). Because of how much sheer power it can output through all the cores, it lowers its single thread use. I go from having 36.62GHz of max processing power to just a wimpy 2.27. There is no fix. SQUAD legally can't upgrade Unity to being multi-threaded. So I highly doubt you found a cure-all situation.

If you want to run KSP.exe, dont doubleklick on the icon. Left click on it and klick run with: Usually, KSP wants to be runned with the onboard, but if you say run with (for example) NVIDIA GPU, the problem is fixed. Even Microsoft Support did not know that.

I have a similar CPU and the same GPU, and since i fixed this, KSP runs better than EVERY OTHER GAME on my PC.

IN HIGHEST OPTIONS!! :-):-)

That sounds like nVidia optimus, a technology specific to nVidia laptops that allows you to switch between integrated and nVidia graphics, you should have got details with the laptop to explain it but as far as I understand it Optimus will assume you want to use the onboard graphics for all applications unless they use DirectX or it's been specifically told to switch for that application (either by the user or by a pre-loaded profile). KSP will just use whichever graphics card is presented as default by the system.

Right, but running the program with the better GPU is nothing about only NVIDIA. I now run even the Internet Explorer with my better GPU! :-)

So... How do I actually do this? Your explanation wasn't exactly use-able

EDIT:

Worked out a minor solution to speed ksp up for people with more than one core, use task manager (processes tab) to shift everything off of a core of your choice, and force ksp to work on the newly emptied core only (right click, affinity...) this means that ksp has a core to itself, apart from system processes.

So, for everyone please! This thread isnt about how to tune your compiter for more performance, this thread is about help for people, who think their KSP runs from the Onboard GPU. For everyone else, who thought that I would have the solution for every old(er) card, please start another thread. Thank you. :-)

What kind of system processes are we talking about here?

My CPU is never used more than 2% by anything...

So, because I am now on my PC, not on my phone, i'll show you how to fix it in detail.

First, you rightclick on the EXE, then you'll see something like (I have German Windows) "Run with Graphics Processor" and then click on your GPU, wich you want to use. KSP will now rund much better than before.

I really hope that this helped you. :-)

@cardgame

1. System processes:

"System" under "user name" column

All processes that cannot have it's affinity or priority changed.

2. Never used more than 2% for anything? then your CPU is not the problem, and you must have a high-spec gaming computer. My laptop has an average of 10% use when idle (no programs open, no input from users)
