Structural reinforcement and lack thereof

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow Kerbalnauts.

I have noticed that often times, parts have connection strength, rigidity, and force tolerance that's too low or feel needleasly reinforced for my needs.

For example despite the fact that the stock game with expansions now contains basically everything you would want for a functional and visual replica of a Cessna 172 or something (to send to Laythe or whatever), the wings will tolerate hundred G turns perfectly well and are much heavier than they ought to be. Likewise, for some hypersonic swing wing SSTO with very high torque and pressure on the wing at low speeds, the parts are likely much too floppy and light and fragile.

The same is largely the case for fuselages. Often times things are much stronger or weaker than necessary and when stronger are quite massive indeed.

I propose that parts be given a structural reinforcement resource that increases most forms of strength and toughness and durability of the part in exchange for weight.

This would also allow more nuanced part damage in a crash or overheating or similar. Say, converting structural reinforcement into a dead weight resource, thus weakening the part, instead of full on deleting a part, just bending a joint, or doing no damage.
