KAL-1000 and closed loop control.

The KAL-1000 has excellent reliability as an open loop control system. The problem is, for some purposes, accumulated error could become significant.

So... is there any practical way to tell a KAL-1000 its situation? Perhaps by that situation causing another KAL-1000 that's currently overriding it to break or something? Like I want something that says "ok, you're now at 3500 m ASL or AGL, time to activate short final sequence." Or "ok, you are at Minmus Periapsis, do circularization sequence.

Post both ideas of wacky contraptions that act as sensors (like, say, solar panels being used to detect occlusion by a planet or moon, parachutes to detect altitude, face-melting temperatures to detect reentry) and any official way this can work.
