Fuel transfer in 1.8

I have docked a tanker with a small station orbiting Minmus.  R&D is level 2.  All couplers and docking ports have crossfeed enabled.  I have a capsule on top of the tanker that will detach to return my Kerbals and it has a heat shield.  Is the heat shield blocking fuel transfer?  If so, can I change that?  If it matters, I'm playing in Hard mode.  Thanks!

Indeed in hard mode the default is that heat shields block fuel transfer. There is a toggle in the settings called "resource transfer obeys crossfeed rules"  or so.

Or you can connect two parts on different sides of the heat-shield with two fuel-pipes, one for each direction. Or instead of pumping existing fuel around, you can create new fuel with the ISRU converters, that new fuel ignores the crossfeed rules. (The latter is what I do. I claim that the resident engineer can not only manage the ISRU converter but also rig fuel hoses.)

Another part the blocks fuel transfer is the Klaw. There is also a line in the part descriptions in the game, that says if a part blocks fuel transfer.
