Scansat Mech Jeb landing spots.

Recommended Posts

How do you find landing spots with scan sat mod on the planets & moons. Then how do you go about adding in the Coordinates into mech Jeb then auto land at said landing spots you want? Or at the very least how do you go about setting a waypoint via scan sat to selected landing location?

You need to have a satellite with scanning equipment in a polar orbit around the celestial body you want to scan.

After your scan is done you can make waypoints on the big ScanSat map. I recommend doing a altimetry scan and looking at the resulting slope map to find a flat spot to land on. After you've made your waypoint you can select it as a target in the mapview, this will automatically tell MechJeb where you want to land.

  1. Deploy a satellite with SCANsat scanners- radar and SAR for low and high resolution altimetry scans to show the terrain height and slope, and a multispectral scanner to map the biomes- into a near polar orbit (90 degrees +/- the smallest FOV of your scanners, to ensure that the entire planet or moon is scanned) and then wait for scanning to occur as the satellite orbits. SCANsat also includes visual and resource (ore) scanners and some can detect anomalies on the surface like monoliths or other Easter eggs.
  2. Once scanning has happened, open up the SCAN global map and switch to the slope map, then find areas which are relatively flat and level and put waypoints down on them. I usually look for points where several biomes intersect and then check for flat bits nearby to maximise the science gains per landing if it’s a rover or a crewed ship.
  3. MechJeb’s landing guidance mode can land at waypoints, so select the newly created waypoint and set it as the target landing site then let MechJeb do the rest.
  4. If you have Breaking Ground, it’s worth adding a BTDT (Been There Done That) scanner to help find scannable surface objects as well as the anomalies and Easter eggs; it’s pricey, but it helps.

Thanks! That was a easy explanation. How do you get that colored slope map on other planets you seem to only get on Kerbin? And how do you find ore deposits with scansat also? Am thinking of doing a all in one probe mission to different planets when I get transfer windows.
