Fuel switch window not working for Thermal Rocket Engine, Tech tree is also completely different compared to previous play thru

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I've only posted here once so I hope I'm still posting in the right place. I'm having issues with my KSP install.

Yesterday I was playing, everything was fine and working great. Had been playing for a few days straight off from work.

So last night I set up a rocket with liquid Methane on a last stage, but the first stage had standard fuel. Had some issues getting the liquid engines to work during launch (Throttle would not move) and long story short, I went and installed a newer version of Fuel Switch, hoping that the issue would be fixed.

Well.... This broke something. It turned into a long process of me deleting all mods, re-downloading all of the mods again for my proper version ( 1.10.1.2939). I don't know what happened, but nothing is the same anymore and there are issues. When I select a thermal rocket to change the propellant type, the propellant window is blank. Also my research tree is ALL kinds of different. I remember I had Plasma Engines/Advanced RCS unlocked about half way thru the tree on my science career. Now the tech tree is completely different, effectively breaking my progression when loading my saves. All my saved crafts have locked parts, and the parts I had unlocked before are now WAY higher on the tech tree. Also I'm getting a warning when launching and loading the game.

Thanks again for your time.. Hope someone can help.

There's a lot to unpack here.

First, your links all point to the same place (the logs), so you may want to fix that.

  • Throttle would not move could be uncontrollable craft (no command), or something along the lines of persistent thrust not letting you throttle up because there's no propellant.
  • Sounds like you aksi installed the full FuelSwitch (not bundled) which likely includes a lot of stuff you probably didn't need, and may have upset some things.
  • It sounds like you also managed to install Community Tech Tree as well
  • I suspect you have a lot of fuel switching mods installed (IFS is listed twice - did you install it twice or different versions?), IFS and Tweakscale should work together, but if you have firespitter and b9partswitch (which, if you have station parts expansion redux then you probably do) then that's a lot of overlapping functionality and potential incompatibilities. Check each mod to make sure.

In terms of fixing it... I hope you have backups.

First, backup your last known "good" save before doing anything else to it. Remove all your mods, and read the instructions and compatibility for each one when you add them back in. Restore the save (keep the backup separate) and test it. Repeat until you get it right. If you don't have backups, then it's entirely possible that with the amount of changes you've made, the existing craft & game might be unsalvageable, so bear that in mind before you spend a lot of effort on it.

Finally, in the future, backup your gamedata and saves folder before you make any changes, because unpicking this stuff is a minefield and can take forever.

I just fixed the links, and removed the double IFS, my bad.

Yeah I managed to backup my saves before I went and reinstalled everything. I hope this can be salvaged somehow... Just not sure where to start.

So I managed to find a download list via Firefox from when I originally installed the mods. I believe I have everything working back to normal now, saves load fine, everything is where it needs to be, but I'm still having an issue with a Krusader Thermal Engine not showing any propellant types? Not sure what could be causing this....

Well I'm glad you've managed to recover almost everything. Don't forget to backup your gamedata when it's stable again!

Sounds like there just probably aren't any valid propellants (or possible reactors) for that engine for it to choose from, but as you're 90% of the way there I'd suggest you take it to the KSPIE Support Thread (actually I see you already have!), or try checking your GameData folder against the recommended mods from KSPIE to ensure you have everything installed.
