KSP crashing on loading screen, freezes computer in the process.

Recommended Posts

Hello. I've been having a problem for the past few days where I'd load KSP and right as it's done loading all the mods I have installed, it freezes my system, then crashes. This only happens on modded installs. Vanilla installs run just fine, so I'm sure it's a mod issue. I installed the mods using CKAN. I'm running Pop!_OS 21.04 64 bit. Any and all help is appreciated.

Hey, @AbelTheLycanroc, and welcome aboard! I'm sorry you're having issues with your game- I have had similar things happen to me when I use a lot of mods.

I think people would find it helpful if you uploaded the crash logs for the event so that they can see what's going wrong. I suggest making a spoiler then copy/pasting the log into there. Alternatively, you could upload the file to some online hosting site and link it here.

:)

Ah. You've put mods in the Steam copy of KSP, haven't you?

Bad idea.

Steam breaks modded KSP on a very regular basis, the best thing to do is:

  1. Copy your save files (Right click KSP in Steam > local files > browse local files, then inside the KSP directory go to saves > [your save name] ) to the desktop for safekeeping.
  2. Completely uninstall all mods.
  3. Disable Steam cloud syncing for KSP (under General tab in the pop-up window that opened in step 1).
  4. Completely uninstall KSP via Steam, reinstall it, then verify file integrity to make sure that your fresh new install is correct.
  5. Run KSP and make sure it loads without mods.
  6. Copy the KSP directory in its entirety (the directory that opens when you 'browse local files' in step 1, go up one level and copy 'Kerbal Space Program') and paste that somewhere outside of the Steam folder tree- desktop would do, or an external drive, or just anywhere that Steam can't get to it.
  7. Install your mods on that new copy. The only downside to this is that the modded copy doesn't get updated when an update comes out, but that's also a good thing as it won't break your modded games. Since 1.12 is the last major release for KSP and only minor patches/fixes are expected, the game-breaking stuff is less relevant but Steam will still break stuff on its own so you're better off avoiding it; the very infrequent pain of updating a modded copy of KSP isn't nearly as bad as the frequent issues that come with putting mods in the Steam copy.

this didn't work. on top of that, I've never had a problem with steam and mods prior to switching to Pop!_OS. what else is weird is that on launch, it kills my spotify client.

EDIT: could it be a memory issue? it worked on kubuntu on my old system with 32gb ram, but I only have 16 on this new system.
