Yes, the surface gravity of Kerbin and Mum are approximately the same as Earth and Moon respectively. However both bodies are 1/10th the size and must be many times denser in order to have that much gravity!

Kerbin's atmosphere is about as dense as Earth's at sea level, but it drops off much faster - you can orbit Kerbin safely at 75km, but that's far too low for Earth.

The smaller size and thinner atmosphere are intended to make life easier for astro-Kerbs - ship design is less critical than Real-World ship design, and the reduced scale means getting into orbit takes only a few minutes instead of the much longer time it takes to get to Earth orbit.

I used the Tsiolkovsky rocket equation on my rocket but am not quite sure where to go from here

You want around 4500m/s-5500m/s for a stable low Kerbin orbit and I believe the recommendation for a mun mission is along the lines of 7000-8000m/s total (launch from KSC, land on mun, return to kerbin's surface).
