Help instaling mods correctly.

I know there are many people asking this question, or have been, but for me i do not understand the answers and believe me i have search the far corners of the internet trying to find answers. I don't really understand what to do after downloading the mod. I have tried many times to install the parts of the mod into the 'parts' folder but when i load the game it has none of the new mod parts. I'm trying to install the Novapunch remix pack mod into my game. If someone can tell me in the simplest way possible, it would be GREATLY appreciated. I'm running the latest Kerbal Space Program update available (0.17) , and a capable computer.

Edit: found out why this was not working, human error: I was editing my 0.16 version of the game (not realising it was 0.16) and opening the short cut for the 0.17 version of the game...
