If your 'planning' somehow manages to skip the whole 'holding things against your monitor' stage, then i'm all ears.

You can do it by timing transits in the map view, timing rise and set times of celestial bodies from orbit and the surface, etc. It is an interesting geometry challenge and it works great. I am sure that there are other methods too. I have never held a protractor up to my screen.
