Running Kerbal on PCs with Lower than "Required" Specs

Recommended Posts

So I bought KSP2 because I Really like KSP1 Steam did not inform me that my system was not to spec and as expected on starting a campaign it freezes at loading screen, still no warnings.
After doing some research I found many post stating that "your computer is not to spec" to basically anyone with a similar problem and almost gave up. However, given i have some tech experience I decided to do a bit of trouble shooting.

There is a screwy loading bug that causes the game to freeze and or crash.
How to avoid it? Wait for your FPS to stabilize, typically once the fps quits dropping and starts going back up.
For me, it means waiting 10ish seconds before loading a game EVERY time I load including reverting and loading saves.
I also closed out of most of the resource heave programs in the task bar, things like discord, epic games, web browsers, and document editors, basically any user program I was not actively using.

Once you get it loaded for the first time, this may take several tries to succeed, launch a probe with the absolute minimum pieces to achieve orbit and remain functional.
This will be the only place you ever create a save for your game!
Something about the initial load is causing the issue so if you simplify the initial load all is well.
There appears to be at least two separate items causing the crash one for KSC and one for procedural generated wings (I think), I have not played around with it enough to confirm, but I am pretty sure it is not just loaded objects.

If you are having trouble loading at higher res, but you can't stand low res, load in with low res and then go into settings and increase the resolution.
I do not notice much difference in frame rate switching to higher resolution, maybe 10-15%.

I have played for +14hrs +30hrs so far mostly on 1600x900 Fullscreen with all the options set to the lowest state, which is not the lowest setting.
I have successfully launched and loaded a 100+ 300+ part rocket while having several rockets in orbit.

My specs are laughable...
WIN10x64 - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ - 16GB RAM - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M 2GB VRAM
I get good frame rate +30FPS (unless I do something stupid like fly under 1,000m at +300m/s at which I get 10ish fps)

Now then, there are several other bugs that I experience, but I can't tell if it is simply that I am running it on a 1/10 the minimum required specs PC
Here is a brief and likely not complete list:
When I rapidly move the camera flight is destabilized
If time is paused entering Mission control stays at a load screen  - - - - (can be quickly fixed simply by using keyboard shortcut to advance time)
FPS not always accurate  - - - - (sometimes the FPS reported in the corner of the screen does not align with the actual FPS I am seeing both higher and lower)
Kerbol showing as a pink dot, light source - - - - (this one through me for a loop for a while as normally you don't look directly at the sun I kept seeing "the dot" appear in the VAB and a couple other places not knowing what it was at the time.)
Periodic auto saves not wanting to load when it is loading into a craft moving through the atmosphere - - - - (I probably should create manual saves when I know I'm at a location that it will load to avoid this, but I'm lazy.)
Time marches on while in VAB without a way to pause it - - - - (not sure this one is a bug, but I liked that about KSP1, if you made a mistake you could quick build a backup rocket with anything needed to correct the first typically way more expensive rocket, got fuel?)

I will experiment a bit at at some point soon to see if I can determine "Max" graphics settings I can run the game at and still have good frame rate and add more tips for getting the game running on older computers, but right now I'm enjoying the game.
