[WIP] KerbX - A SpaceX analogue for KSP

Grasshopper flight video released. Goes pretty high this time! Almost looks like the animations spacex made where they show the falcon 9 landing. Also elon said it held up against winds on this one.

Also btw with with Falcon 9 v1.1 they will start doing propulsive landings over water, so that should be interesting!

Is that not really inefficient?

Not all Rockets work in the same way like they kinda do in KSP. Antares has such a low Thrust to Weight ratio at liftoff (something like 1.2:1) they have to run the main engines at 108% power for the first 30-40 seconds of flight to get the thing off the pad.

I have this noted down from launch day, Orbital stated all this:

What to expect during Antares early trajectory. If you are accustomed to the rapid acceleration of Orbital's solid-fueled launch vehicles following lift-off, today's Antares launch will be very different, especially during the early phase of its trajectory.

Even though it will consume close to 1 ton of prop every second after lift-off, the early acceleration will be surprisingly slow.

When the engines first ignite, the rocket will not lift off from the pad for two full seconds.

At 10 seconds after Stage 1 engine ignition the vehicle will have accelerated to about 40 mph and climbed to 230 feet altitude.

At 20 seconds after ignition, #Antares will be traveling at 100 mph at be about 1,250 feet above the pad.

Even after 60 seconds, the vehicle will still be subsonic (about 460 mph) at just over 3 miles in altitude.

Antares achieves Mach 1 about 75 seconds after lift-off, when it will be at about 30,000 feet in altitude.

Spacex google + page posted yesterday grasshopper made a launch yesterday with the altitude of 820ft. They only have pictures right now but I expect a video by Wednesday

to see the first falcon heavy launch?

Defiantly gonna see the Heavy launch. I was thinking of going to see the Falcon 9 V1.1 and find where the do the powered water landing and catch, if just a bit of that. Though in all reality, it will probably be too far off shore to see that.

Other news, SpaceX PR sent out an email, warning locals to the Texas test site that starting Tuesday 30th April SpaceX will be making "a lot more noise" than usual from their test site in Texas.

The first Falcon 9 v1.1 core is ready to be tested.
