[1.12.5] Dan's Science Overhaul (0.1.2) - 27.07.2024

Ever wonder that the science system in KSP is way too easy? Getting way too much science biome hopping on Minmus? Well, now you do not have to worry about that anymore! With this mod, you will actually have to explore the system! Science Labs are now for transmitting the full amount of science you would get on recovery, Biome hopping is non existent, the barometer does not work in space and more! This mod is still very early in development, so feedback would be appreciated!

Uh hi, i got some questions about these changes

  • Science Lab being repurposed, to only increase transmit values and not increasing science values/Science Labs are now for transmitting the full amount of science you would get on recovery

So should the experiments be on the same vessel as the science lab or does it now work as like a relay? Is that based on crewed recovery or ''automated'' recovery?

  • Biome hopping is removed. There are biomes but surface samples or crew reports will not give you any more science.

So is biome hopping removed purely because crew reports and surface samples dont do anything anymore? Or did you do something to the other biome based experiments?

That's boring as hell! No more rovers, no more Eve airplanes or Duna helicopters, no more polar expeditions or precision landings and hunting for unique biomes. Just land anywhere on the equator, plant a flag, collect science and fly away to never return. Do this 14 times and the whole system is explored.

It's really the only way to make you explore the system instead of just biome hopping on minmus a couple times and being done with the experiments, if you have any other ideas you can suggest them to me!

I can't really explain it well but the Science Lab doesn't 5x the science amount anymore, it just transmits the science amount you would have gotten if you recovered it on Kerbin

And crew reports and Surface Samples do give you science, it's just that they don't depend on biomes anymore.

to make you explore the system

I wouldn't call a single landing in a random place on every celestial body "exploration". It's like "been there done that, nothing to do here anymore".  For me the real exploration is to perform a KerbNet orbital survey, find points of interest like biome borders or unique biomes, mark them with waypoints and use everything I can to collect science from those points: rovers, dropships, spaceplanes, Eve-optimised planes, ground bases to refuel all this fleet of science collectors. Without biome specific science all this complexity is not required: land once, go to the next celestial body, you can collect all the possible science of the whole system in less than 10 launches, what's the point of this? You could just nerf the science output from Minmus rather than remove the need to explore multiple biomes on other celestial bodies.

nerfing the science output from specifically one body without using plugins is impossible to my knowledge, and if i did nerf science outputs newer players would struggle getting even past orbit. if biome hopping was on most people wouldn't even go to the other planets which is why i turned biome hopping off. some experiments do also rely on biomes so biome hopping technically does still exist, but yes, i get that feeling of "been there nothing to do anymore". i'll try to think of something to atleast increase exploration as that is my goal
