Questions about rovers! Help is needed!

Recommended Posts

Ok so i have been trying to make a Mun-Rover but i stumbled across some problems.

First of all i'll tell you what i want the rover to do!

Things the rover must be able to do:

-Move hitchhiker containers around and dock onto them

-Must run on electricity only!

-Must be able to transfer 3 Kerbals (or 4)

-Must be mobile

-Must be able to get to the Mun

-Preferably the pod of Design 5 since i like the view :) from the cockpit

-Must have lights

-Must have shielded docking ports and not normal once when on the moon

-Solar power only

The problems:

-Can't get it to the moon

-Can't transport enough kerbals

-Can't move hitchhiker containers around

-Can't attach it to a rocket

-Flips over on kerbal

-.......

Help please!

I'm going crazy here!

Now i'll show you the designs i made but keep in mind that all my designs have failed!

Design 1:

Design 2:

Design 3:

Design 4:

Design 5 (middle part gets removed when landed on the Mun):

Thank you

I must first ask... Do you plan on having a power plant up there, to charge all those batteries? O_o

- You have, at least, 10 times too much batteries.

- You may want to put your wheels perpendicular to the ground.

On the second pic, you have engines that points to the ground... Would you mind explaining?

I like your first design, if you want to transport more kerbals, you may want to replace the NCS adapter by pods, or cockpits :) Also, no need for Ion Engines, the wheels are powered.

I tried some designs, based on your first, and I came up with this:

You can, of course, replace the little docking port and the adapter with a shielded docking port.

I'm going to try and see if I can land this thing on Mün :)

Edit: The lander is designed, I managed to elevate the rover to 5km, stabilize for some seconds, then "land" at approximately 20m/s (my fault, not the lander's x) ). The lander suffered from the fall, but it saved the rover.

Landing this on Mün is really simple, I think. It has at least twice the amount of fuel needed to land from Munar orbit, and a reasonable thrust. Launching it is easy too, just have to do it with a big launcher. I won't have time to do it in the next hours, though :/

What are those adapters called on the back of the rover (facing towards the container) and also the one on top of the adapter on top of container? since i can't seem to find those.

Thanks a lot by the way!

They're the FL-A10 adapter from the KSPX pack :) I guess they can be replaced by the modular girder adapter...

I'm going to try launching it on Mün now.

My launcher is a bit... wibbly-wobbly. Ahem. But it works :D

Aaaah great :D I'll be looking forward to it!

Hmmm Power station on the moon seems interesting ;)

I could build a solar plant :o

Would be so awesome!

Daang i should make a youtube series out of this!

Here is my final design for the 3 rovers i made ;).

Solar rover (little one with solar panels) Designed to link together with many solar panels to supply power to the power rover.

Power rover (the one with all the batteries) Designed to store lots and lots of power!

Moving rover (the big one) Designed to transport the solar rover, power rover and crew containers!

Hey, quick question, since my design for my first manned rover is similar to this; how did you build this? Did you make this in the VAB, or the Spaceplane Hangar? Because when I try to make the rover in the VAB, the wheel and landing gear symmetry is all wrong, because, obviously, I'm having to build it vertically when the rover itself will be horizontal, and if I do it in the Hangar, I can't get the launcher on it. I do use Subassembly Loader, since that's the only mod I can tolerate using, but it doesn't let me save the rover.

Cheers :D
