All of the above, and keep in mind the game is in alpha. It's FAR from done, and it's already really fun, so that should tell you how amazing it's going to be at launch! That being said, Squad is working on mining etc, which I believe is planned for next major patch, so I would suggest getting some basic infrastructure set up! That's my plan, anyway. If I ever finalize my designs.

Resource mining is coming in the next update or two. That will give you an incentive to set up mining bases or fuel relay stations that you can use as stepping stones to reach the more distant bodies with larger and more complicated ships.

There are also "anomalies" or easter eggs tucked away on many of the bodies. You can either attempt to discover these for yourself through manual exploration (very hard) or use the ISA Mapping mod to locate them and then design lander missions to reach all of them (still pretty hard).

My main obstacle to playing right now is as follows: Once I've gotten somewhere, what is there to do apart from go home?

Getting home is far from trivial.

Next step is coming back with a larger ship, set up a base, and a rover and perform crew rotations.

You can also get the ISAMap Sat mod and start searching for Easter Eggs and other artifacts of interest...

Base management is tricky. But good fun. Pushes your imagination, and launch vehicle design.

Also, going for a walk, (or drive) is fun!*

*Extra imagination is sometimes required. Planets are just computer rendered balls, after all.

Walk, and enjoy the achievement and discovery.

Aww, just look at that.. ahhh, manic smile. Of to discover...

If you bring a rover, navigating large areas without crashing can be a challenge. And an experience.

I enjoy the story making aspect of the game, keeping track of what kerbal does what, treating them differently, or modifying actions based on what I think they're like.

Stations with re-usable landers are my next challenge, so I can land and re-land at multiple sites before going home. This'll be harder, but more interesting than a simple "Drop a lander there" mission.
