Naming your craft

Why, by blindly hitting the keyboard!

Sometimes I'll use more (or less) creative "real word" names... but I don't like to start thinking about it (because I can easily spend hours just picking a name for a vehicle that blows up at launch XD)

If a ship starts behaving in an interesting fashion, I change its name accordingly.

I currently am up to Explodes Pretty IV, and Tornado VI. There was also a What The Heck from when I decided to try to reverse engineer that canard bug, and apparently put way too many on (i.e. it would speed up uncontrollably and spontaneously combust within 15 seconds of liftoff, or if you did nothing it would just hover a few dozen meters in the air, slowly rotating and mocking the planet and its laws of physics).

I just name mine with a person I like in the scientific/space community and a number that sounds cool with the name. For example, I have DeGrasse Tyson 2 as a Deep-Space probe, Kaku 6 as an orbiter, and Armstrong 1 as a Munar lander. It only gets such a name if it succeeds. Either that naming system or I name it by what it looks like.

In general I shoot for greek/roman names. Usually launchers get god names with the larger the launcher the more senior the god. The capsules get demi-god names. Right now my general purpose heavy lifter is the Hera 1d, last night it put the Perseus 9 capsule into orbit where I had my first successful docking with the Bacchus 1 fuel tanker. So right off the bat my naming convention is pretty much shot. Oh, my 1.25m launcher is the Juno and my 1 man capsule is the Heracles.

So really, anything that seems cool/appropriate for the mission. My mapping sat is the Argus 1 and the Argus 2 is going for a Mun shot tonight.

I ask people on an image board that I frequent to name my craft. As a result, I have lots of craft names that would offend a great many people for several reasons. I always get a laugh though when I open up the game and launch something only to see "Poop Turd McNugget Pants MkVII" in a geosynchronous orbit above the KSC.

Sometimes I just name them after friends/family that have cool names though.

Usually I come up with stupid portmanteaus like the "Eeloplorer", the "Mohoplorer" or cheap puns like "Münman" (Minuteman - get it? :wink:)for my first rocket, that could reach ze Mün. My industrial kethane-refinery in Minmus orbit is called the "Kethlab"

MüLa= Mün Lander

IPSHI = Interplanetary Ship

Navsat = Navagation Satellite

Comsat = Communication Satellite

Geosat = Geostationary Satellite

BAHA = Base Habitat

BAREC = Base Recon Module

BAPO = Base Power Module

BASAPO = Base Solar Powerplant

BAKEM = Base Kethane Miner

BAKER = Base Kethane Refinery

KESSTA = Kerbin Spacestation (KEGESSTA for Geoorbit)

DESSTA = Duna Spacestation (DEGESSTA for Geoorbit)

MÜNSSTA = Mün Spacestation

LASTA = Landerstage

HELAVE = Heavy Launch Vehicle

IDOPRO = Ion-Drive Probe

ICON = My comsats for the interplanetary communication (remotetech)

BACOVE = Base Construction Vehicle

When I bother with acronyms, my system is generally to list the body and orbit class first (ex. LKO for Low-Kerbin Orbit, HMO for High Munar Orbit, etc.), followed by a - and a short acronym for its purpose (OS for Observation Satellite, CS for Communications Satellite, L for Lander, etc.) and either a number (for something from a series) or a snappy name in quotes.

Of course, there's always the comedy option of backronyms. Perhaps you'd like to fly the Kerbin Interstellar Travel Trailer Yacht (or KITTY).

The only real convention I have is for the type of mission, which is based off of cloud types

Cirrus - Unmanned Probes (orbiters, landers, and rovers)

Nimbus - Manned missions to other planets and their moons

Stratus - Manned missions around Kerbin and its Moons

I haven't done flights to all the planets but they mostly are just whatever name I think of. So my ion probe to Jool, with its octagonal structure and many solar panels is called the Cirrus Lotus. And Eve was the Cirrus Orchid. For Mün and Minmus I used Serenity and Tranquility. And for the Joolian moons I started with a biblical theme but cant think of any others besides Revelation (Laythe), Genesis (Vall), and Exodus (Tylo). So i guess Bop and Pol will go unexplored until i think of something. Suggestions are welcome.

I made a thread like this before the reset, and was about to start another one until I saw this. I'm currently using a system I quite like.

My current system is this:

<Name><Series/Model Number>

So like, a rover built for Duna would be called: Octavia Mk.(Version/Series number here)

All satellites that are for Kerbin and the Kerbin system are named Aspen. Satellites for Duna are named Echo, for Dres they are Maya, Jool's system satellites are Sky, and so on. I don't know what I will name satellites for the new gas giant yet; any suggestions?

Rover names, for me, are based off of atmosphere and whether it's a moon or not. Same for manned landers. So for example, if I have a rover that is being built for Pol, I will name it Lightning Mk.(Model Number Here).

Stations are different. I just name the station whatever I want and name the core I'm about to add. I don't take time renaming it in flight, cause it shouldn't take too long to dock it.

I change flight name from the build name, once in a stable orbit. So, if I already have three satellites in the Jool system, I would name the forth: "Sky 4"

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
