A compact, streamlined atomic engine with slightly more kick but not as much efficiency.

Hi, nice mod, will have to check it out.

Can I suggest keeping all your mods in one thread? Just create a thread called Nazari's mods, or create a company name or something and release them under that, instead of creating a new thread for each piece you make. If the forums get wiped again (and lets never say never.... ) regaining all your information will be a lot harder and you will lose a lot (like I did and many others)

What could be more Kerbal than a flying nuclear reactor.

I always liked that Crowbar idea, not as a real plane, but just the technical side of it.

A nuclear ramjet with unlimited range paired with this engine to get it up to ramjet speeds might be a fun combination.

It may be the equivalent of a nuclear ramjet- http://www.merkle.com/pluto/pluto.html

It looks cool enough to be the rocket-version of this engine design...

I made a project pluto mod a while ago, it doesn't work too well do to the current drag model, so it's on hiatus until that's fixed and/or i get a better model for it.

Fascinating reads. So anything that uses this is likely going to deafen, burn and irradiate everything below it?

No probs. Just launch it from the middle of the desert. Those are useless anyway, right? :P *Disclaimer* Not my opinion, but science fiction authors from the first half of the previous century *End of disclaimer*

Yes launching with a conventional jet engine or rockets (as proposed in the actual nuclear ramjet development) would be safe... for your country. Any allied countries that the nuclear ramjet passed over would be pwned. Enemy countries too, of course, but that was a more innocent (vicious?) time.

Any idea how high this thing would have to fly before the nuclear radiation was safe at ground level?

Outside of the atmosphere, at least. Nuclear dust is particularly dangerous, and a nuclear engine would have allot of pollutants in it's exhaust. (Only exception is a nuclear light-bulb engine, but people tend to forget those)

But a nuclear ram-jet would only work within the atmosphere....

Truly an unsafe anywhere technology!

Yes. Although, the nuclear ramjet was supposed to have a run-time of 6 hrs+ @ Mach 3, so it had some advantages....

Imagine the reaction of chemtrails conspiracy nuts everywhere :D Right now they are so stupidly stubborn, i feel the need to smash my head into the table repeatedly sometimes. With nuclear powered planes flying above our heads? They would finally move their posteriors outside and form pitchfork-armed mobs.
