The MachingBird Challenge!

Recommended Posts

So I started out going for a fancy looking jet, but ended up with this little bottle rocket.

I removed all monopro from the capsule so it wasn't possible to use in any way. No staging or jettison of any parts. Maximum speed 2364.1 m/s before I ran out of gas. :D

Edit: Oh I forgot. I was going to name it Streak, but that name doesn't seem to fit this one. So I think I just go with the Bottle Rocket!

So... is this a .22 entry' date=' or a .23 entry?[/quote']

it's .22 entry, you can see in the pics there is no monoprop capacity inside the cockpit. I think I'm also gonna give it a go in .23, the intakes seem to hold out significantly longer now. Kinda weird how sometimes the intakeair resource indicator shows zero while engines are running full power.

  • 3 weeks later...

My submission to the machingbird challenge: Orithyia

TDbEO5Y.jpg

Stock, Wingless, wheeless, single jet, manned speed plane

Nothing too fancy about the design

w723fzH.jpg

A little tricky to take off without wheels but it works

Off she goes!

DBT5s19.jpg

A proper flight pic (sorry the former wasn't convincing enough)

Y6F8TI8.jpg

First speed run! But i must try for more..

ooajtxm.jpg

She topped out at 2377 m/s!

I'm sure there's a way to go faster!

So I was looking through the forums, again, and saw this. I thought, "this sounds like a job for the Flying Rock". Little rock created for m1sz's "Fastest Plane under 1km" challenge.

Clean and simple with no intake stacking.

Full stock (I happen to have Kerbal Joint reinforcement installed, but with such a small plane and the strut added there it shouldn't matter. But it's OP's decision).

Wow, I'm surprised to see a new entry!

Now... While the design seems a bit sketchy, I'll admit it is possible to finagle the construction to do such, so I'll accept that. The problem comes in that I can not reasonably consider the second screenshot to be "flight". Do you have or can you get a screenshot that isn't the craft on impending oceanic collision?

Updated the album to include a twin-ramjet version that brushed 2300m/s :o

Not sure what you mean by "flight", by the way, but I think the 9th image and from 16 onwards count as flight?

All the intake stacking. wow

In case you couldn't tell I have nearly 0 experience with spaceplanes so sorry

Since I mistakenly thought I deleted my post while trying to add the flight pic I ended up doing a new one of a different run. I had no idea it sometimes takes hours for noobie posts/edits to get approved with seemingly no indication it ever existed!

It's the same craft from my original post but has 6 more air intakes

Alright, Lesbiotic, you have been added. Sorry for the delay.

Which of these flights would you like me to log? There are several in here, and I'm not sure they're in chronological order...

Pictures 1~4 are the "Summary" screenshots, those would be fine haha

FYI there are two in there. There are just too many pictures oh dear

May I enter, too? :)

It's not really an aircraft... It's flying powerplant. :D

"Birdie on steroids Mk1"

Unmanned Stock, 0.23, no physics mods.

Mod list:

Docking Port Alignment

Final flame-out

Statistics

http://smages.com/images/ksp201dqd.jpg

Final speed over ground: 2307 m/s

There is a room for improvement, I had too much vertical velocity at the top. I had over 2400 during practice, but... no proof, so I hadn't. :D

May I post another one later, if I'll be able to set new record?

Edited the gallery, there is only one flight in there now. First four are the requested "proof" pictures, the others are just the journey.

Hey guys.

Took a quick stab at this with a plane that I couldn't get to fly at all lol... So - here is my deal.

It's called "Geezer"

EDIT: Forgot to say that it's Stock parts and obviously unmanned....for now....

had to do it twice.... even then the engine fell off on landing, it was pretty rough, the plane design itself isn't bad. im just a horrible pilot...

anyway

should be "more heat insulators needed", "precision landing"

and freaking ***** im just 50 sec off the 40min mark >:(

it was design to be as low drag as possible, so it need to be fast to fly.(70m/s for takeoff, 200m/s minimum cruise speed @1000m).... thus the need for high speed at landing thus the reason it was rough and the engine broke off

update:

right

i forgot to tell the name.... i think i named it the 'C-Nagator'

an entry for another challenge. i was pretty limiting in the plane capabilities, such as, carried more fuel than what was needed, and need to stay under 70k alt.

another thing.... doesn't abuse the ram air intake usage and used only 1 engine for 3 tanks worth of fuel (if emptied of course it would be significantly faster)
