Well, Mods fill gaps that are meant to be closed by the devs sooner or later.. for example Clairas superb addon parts pack that will (partly) become stock sometime has an Engine in the middle between an LVT30/45 and the Mainsail, which makes it very good for 2nd Stages..

I would say no, they aren't required. I would say yes, you do want them for a fuller experience of the game.

Some mod parts "cheat" or are "unbalanced". I personally go with the ones that are balanced with the existing parts.

Even though I have Claira's add-on (I actually don't have all of the parts installed) I am glad a number of those parts are being added as "stock" in the game. It makes sense.

Personaly hope is single kerbal landing can, space station hub part as well as the "weaker" 2.5m engines and smaller RCS tank.

I am very interested to see what else she is working on. I can't imagine that all she has done or is doing is adding a bunch of her existing stuff as stock resources. I'd imagine that would be a one day job, if that, to add it to the resources files. Though I know she is working on the UI as well, but I am curious what her wonderful mind is coming up with (Nova too...well, supposing he is working on any new parts).

You can certainly play and have fun without any mods, but there are more than a few out there that certainly add to the game. Most of what I have installed is stuff that I think should (and likely will be) in the game anyway, it's just not because the devs haven't even hit the .20 alpha version. So, I'm basically just getting parts of the game before they are officially released. For instance, I've got a few of the Lazor parts. Romfarer is now part of the dev team, so something like what I've got is certainly going to be in the final game. The instrumentation is rather... sparse, to say the least, and the devs have mentioned Kerbals being able to automatically perform certain flight functions. Adding readouts and a small amount of automation sounds an awful lot like MechJeb to me. Haystack? Confirmed that its functionality is already in the game. Graphotron? MapSat? Crew Manifest? Subassembly Saver/Loader, Editor Tools? Not confirmed, but something like them will almost certainly be there.

TL;DR-While I understand the desire to challenge yourself by staying stock, there is nothing at all wrong with 'skipping ahead' to patch something that isn't exactly broke, but certainly not done.

Kethane, ISA, Protractor, Mechjeb (i found that i absolutely suck at docking to anything that has more than one docking port:blush:), Chatterer adds nice immersion - i love to hear my little green guys gibber to each other. Also KAS, Crew Manifest, Fuel balancer...All things that add depth to the game, and give us more control.

Mods with larger rocket parts ( like KW ) can also keep the part count down in usable figures for larger launchers - similarily for stations if you poke around for large trusses, docking ports etc. I think FAR is an essential, but that's because I build a lot of planes and the default aerodynamics are horrid. Do what you like though, it isn't a competition.

I only play lightly modded, but as far as anything I consider essential? Two words.

Quantum. Struts.

I consider them practically essential when making something like a station that will be made up of multiple parts docked together. Makes the whole thing very rigid.
